Definition: The Fire Marshal/Assistant Fire Chief shall be appointed by the Fire Chief in accordance with the current Meet and Confer contract. Responsible to oversee assigned Division
to include the Fire Prevention Section and other section(s) as assigned by the Fire Chief. Work involves planning, organizing, coordinating, and supervising staff involved in such areas
as fire protection plan review; inspection of existing properties; development of codes, ordinances, interpretations, and regulations; fire investigations; and community education.
This position continuously evaluates Division/Section performance and effects changes in equipment, methods, processes, and training within the limits of delegated authority or recommends
changes to the Fire Chief. Work in this classification depends on senior leadership and managerial skill, sound judgement, collaboration, strong communication skills, and effective
decision-making. The Fire Marshal/Assistant Chief is a member of the Fire Department’s Senior Leadership Team and represents the Fire Chief and the Fire Department’s policies and procedures
to all employees.
Essential Functions:
Serves as a member of the Fire Department Senior Leadership Team
Builds and maintains effective relations with other Division(s)
Supervises entire DFD in accordance with policies and procedures
Assists in the development of the Department’s budget
Enforces laws and ordinances
Builds and maintains positive relationships with developers
Oversees the Fire Department’s Development Review Committee (DRC)
Demonstrates continuous effort in improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively to provide quality seamless customer service
Directs and monitors the investigation of fires and fire deaths
Directs and administers fire prevention inspection activities
Evaluates and recommends improvements to continually update the fire prevention program and the City of Denton Fire Code
Directs and monitors internal investigations as directed by the Fire Chief
Initiates and participates in meetings with civic and service organizations and promotes good community relations
Responds appropriately and timely to City Management and Council and makes professional presentations as necessary.
Maintains positive, respectful, cooperative relationship with peers, subordinates, and supervisors
Additional Duties:
Performs other duties as assigned
Subject to on-call status
Minimum Qualifications / Acceptable Equivalency:
Five years of experience performing progressively responsible duties related to the essential functions of the position and a Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Public Administration, Fire
Science or related field
OR
Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job

Conditions of Employment:
Must have a valid Class “C” Driver’s License prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license within 30 days of hire per state law)
Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check
Must successfully secure intermediate fire inspector certification within one year of appointment
Must successfully secure other appropriate certifications within a defined period as directed by the Fire Chief
Must be able to respond after normal working hours as necessary in emergency and non-emergency situations
Section(s) assigned to the Fire Marshal/Assistant Chief may change at any time at the discretion of the Fire Chief
The Fire Marshal/Assistant Fire Chief and the Emergency Services/Assistant Fire Chief and any future appointed Assistant Fire Chief may be rotated at any time at the discretion of the
Fire Chief
