Report to: GIS & Applications Supervisor
FLSA Designation: Non-Exempt
Definition: Responsible for managing GIS data that supports Technology Services GIS operations, potentially including data collection, analyzing and maintenance of all GIS functions.
Also provides GIS technical assistance, guidance, and support to City employees. This position reports directly to the GIS & Applications Supervisor.
Essential Functions:

Support, update, and ensure quality assurance of all GIS and geospatial data relating to any initiatives or programs belonging to Technology Services GIS.
Updates the City’s GIS parcel addresses, street centerlines, street names, and GIS attributes..
Completes GIS data entry, data validation and performs maintenance of current GIS databases.
Responsible for creating maps and graphic products as assigned for Technology Services GIS. Support other departments GIS needs as assigned.
Update multiple subdivisions with new platting activity including base map features such as easements, right of ways, street centerlines, building footprints, and parcels in the City’s
corporate limits. Update attributes and SDE database.
Provides explanation of technical matters to individuals with little or no background in the subject matter
Attend meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions; reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments
in assigned areas.
Create and make ArcGIS Online maps. Share and collaborate maps with TS GIS staff. Analyze data by adding valuable context to our data combining it with demographics and lifestyle data.
Identifies problems, performs research, and uses independent judgment to solve problems that are difficult to identify or where facts may be insufficient and misleading
Update Base Maps including streets and highways; boundaries for census, postal, and political areas; rivers and lakes; parks and landmarks; place names; and aerial raster maps.
Create and update all Historical Aerials, Schools Zones Map, City Owned Properties, Platting Activity Maps, Recent Annexations, Water and Sewer Maps, Connectivity Component, Denton Mobility
Plans, Pedestrian & Bike Components, and Subdivisions Maps.
Updates all Official City of Denton Printable GIS Maps including Environmental Interest Maps, Community Improvements Services Maps, FEMA Floodplain Map, and Well & Pipeline Locations
Works under routine supervision where the supervisor occasionally reviews work to ensure completion
Additional Duties:
Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications / Acceptable Equivalency:
Bachelor’s degree in GIS, Geography, Information Technology or closely related field
AND
Two (2) years of experience in operating, maintaining and implementing automated mapping and/or GIS systems.
OR
Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job
Core Competencies:
Demonstrates and maintains proficiency with current and developing technologies and software related to geographic analysis.
Knowledge of ESRI/ArcGIS software, personal computers, small and large format printers and plotters, windows applications, and MS Office products.
Has extensive understanding of relational database schemes, analysis and manipulation.
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with co-workers and customers
Ability to balance the needs and priorities of concurrent ongoing projects
Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance
Conditions of Employment:
Must have a valid Class “C” Driver’s License prior to employment
Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, and criminal history background check
Must meet the Civilian Hiring Standards of the Denton Police Department
Preferences:
Municipal government experience
Proficiency in ESRI products and GIS databases
Python, JavaScript, or other programming experience
Experience with 3D, Geostatistical, Network, and Spatial Analyst Tools
Bilingual in Spanish and English
GIS certification
