Definition: Responsible for constructing, energizing, and maintaining electric distribution system for the City of Denton citizens and DME customers.
Essential Functions:
Safely works on primary voltage (>600 volts) without direct supervision
Safely works on secondary voltage (<600 volts) without direct supervision
Safely installs or removes transformers and energized parts on energized circuits without direct supervision
Trouble shoots minor and major problems on distribution system with no supervision
Climbs poles and works at elevated heights
Assists in the continual training of employees: Ground Tech through Journeyman Lineman
Assists Crew Foreman with job steps sequencing, layout, planning, and tailboard discussions
Responsible for their personal safety and the safety of the field work team
Works with engineering installing switches, capacitor banks, and capacitor controllers and reconfigure feeder routes for maintaining balanced loading on the distribution system.
Works with distribution customers and contractors in an cooperative and cost-effective manner
Portrays a positive image for the City of Denton and the Electric Department to employees, customers, developers, contractors and the general public
Assist with scheduling and arranging for all State of Texas required underground one-call locates in advance of project work occurring
Constructs all projects in accordance with the electrical engineering job projects and drawings and works with engineering to find solutions to any unforeseen field changes
Notes and completes all end of project redline as-built drawings and documentation for engineering and GIS use and master repository functions
Enforces departmental safety adherence to City and DME safety rules and regulations and instructs team members on proper work procedures
Follows all appropriate City of Denton and DME policies and procedures
Demonstrates CPR, First Aid and ability to perform pole top and bucket truck rescue and to follow approved DME safety rules and regulations.
Maintains regular and punctual on-site attendance

Minimum Qualifications / Acceptable Equivalency:
High School diploma or GED equivalent
Four years of electric utility experience
Completion of a valid 4-year Lineman Apprenticeship program that is recognized by the US Department of labor or the equivalent
OR
Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job
Core Competencies:
Ability to read, interpret, and construct new electric facilities from engineering blue prints or job work orders and document any and all adjustments that were necessary and approved
to complete the project
Ability to perform electric utility construction and maintenance work safely on the electric distribution and transmission system in Denton
Demonstrated ability to follow feeder route switching orders
Ability to check out materials from the warehouse using the JDE financial system
Ability to operate laptop computer for mapping, redlining, time keeping, and job orders
Ability to complete job orders and other paper work in timely manner
Ability to read and follow engineering projects, work orders, and blue prints
Demonstrated ability to get along with customers and co-workers
Ability to read, understand, and follow departmental safety rules and safe work procedures
Ability to work courteously with other employees and customers
Ability to climb poles and work at heights greater than 30 feet
Ability to work within enclosed spaces
Preferences:
Bilingual in Spanish and English
Conditions of Employment:
Must have and maintain a valid Class “C” Driver’s License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license
and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law)
Must obtain a Texas Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 6 months of employment
Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check
Must pass a physical examination
Must be able to respond to call-in within 30 minutes and be responsible for call when your name comes up on rotation list
Applicants must be available to be on stand-by and work emergency call-outs
Ability to work standby every fifth week
