Electric Engineering Tech III - ET0801 City of Denton Job Description Title: Electric Engineering Tech III Position ID: ET803 Department/Division: Electric Engineering Reports to: Electric Engineering Supervisor FLSA Designation: Non-Exempt Safety Sensitive: Yes DOT: No Definition: Responsible for performing electric distribution line design, including AutoCAD drafting as a primary activity, and assisting with all areas of electrical engineering division responsibility, which involves researching technically and economically viable options used to prepare designs for extension and modifications to the electric utility distribution system as well as assembling project documentation and maintaining organized files and records; performs engineering division field surveying and staking tasks. Essential Functions: Works directly with customers, developers, engineering firms, and DME Operational staff to prepare and manage work associated with provision or improvement of electric service. Utilizes AutoCAD to prepare detailed drawings to support the functions of the Distribution Electrical Engineering division, which includes preparation of details plans for construction of electric facilities; sources of information for creating drawings may be rough sketches, engineering notes, project drawings, drawings from developer, catalogs, manufacturer’s literature, field gathered data, easement, survey, verbal instruction, and other resources. Drafts detailed plans, construction drawings, topographic profiles, work order layouts, maps and related drawings used in the planning, design, and construction of electric facilities. Performs surveying functions such as staking line, locating easements and rights-of-way, and gathering data for preparing site profiles, profiling transmission and distribution line routes, making surveying calculations, and completing other survey related needs. Trains others in surveying principles and field practices. Work with and assist other department personnel to complete necessary fieldwork and assist with production of project documents, standards, specification, and other items as required in support of department responsibilities. Assists with calculations, drawings, and other documentation to support electrical and distribution structural design. Develops and takes ownership of project management under the direction of the supervisor. Utilizes teamwork concepts and ability to get along cordially with customers and coworkers. Performs data collection in the field for electric utility facilities such as for transformers, capacitors, line reclosers, switches, poles, street and security lighting, secondary service routing, etc. Assists with interpreting and implementing the National Electrical Safety Code and other governmental and regulatory codes from the City of Denton or State of Texas. Assists with developing, documenting, reviewing, and completing all aspects of assigned projects; prepares and maintains files and documentation for identifying the most limiting series elements for the distribution system. Performs repetitive and routine tasks accurately, such as drafting of large numbers of project drawings. Additional Duties: Performs other duties as assigned. Train new Electric Engineering Tech employees and/or others within the department as requested. Minimum Qualifications / Acceptable Equivalency: Responsible for research, design, calculations, equipment resources associated with service to all DME distribution class customers while adhering to pre-established guidelines and engineering specifications. High School diploma or GED equivalent 5 years of experience, or educational equivalent, in the field or in a related area. OR A bachelor’s degree, extensive course work, or extensive experience in an applicable engineering or strongly related technical field may be considered as equivalent for any of the above requirements. Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job. Core Competencies: Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with coworkers and customers. Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance. Knowledge of surveying principles and one year of actual field experience in surveying. Experience preparing and working with easements and permits (TxDOT, railroad, and building permits). Strong technical and mathematical background to allow progress in independent study of electrical concepts, electrical theory, line component strength calculations, and other similar topics. Must be self-motivated, take ownership of job responsibilities, and be pro-active in seeking solution for department. Knowledge and use of Computer-aided drafting. Knowledge and use of Microsoft Office software, especially Word, Excel, and Outlook. Knowledge and use of office machinery, including copiers, scanners, printers, plotters. Organizational skills and attention to detail. Knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures within this particular field. Conditions of Employment: Must have a valid Class “C” Driver’s License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 30 days of hire per state law). Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check. Must be able to work overtime when requested. Preferences: Bilingual in Spanish and English. Experience with electric utility operation. Electric utility construction knowledge. Knowledge of electric theory. Strong mathematics and science background. Experience in preparing written reports and documents. Experience in performing repetitive and redundant tasks. Proficiency with digital surveying instruments and data collectors and software. Experience in Project Management.
