Definition: Responsible for constructing, energizing, troubleshooting, testing protective relaying and control schemes, and maintaining NERC Compliance in all City of Denton substations
and transmission systems, including DME’s SCADA system that monitors status, telemetry, and control the electric distribution and transmission systems in Denton.
Essential Functions:
Directs and leads the electric utility substation technicians in safely installing, repairing, and maintaining electrical equipment, and SCADA in substations in Denton
Works with electric engineering on maintenance, operations, and special projects
Coordinates and assist contractors and substation technicians in construction of substations and the commissioning of new stations
Oversees breaker maintenance, testing, change outs and additions (NERC Compliance)
Oversees and assist in relay maintenance, testing, change outs and additions (NERC Compliance)
Oversees substation transformer maintenance, testing, change outs and additions (NERC Compliance)
Installs and helps designs the security for the stations (NERC Compliance)
Perform switching on transmission when needed
Perform switching on transmission when needed
Reads blueprints and diagram schematics; troubleshoots and repairs malfunctioning equipment using volt meters, ammeters, and related electric testing apparatus
Instructs subordinates in specific work techniques to assure tasks are accomplished in a safe, efficient manner
Constructs all projects in accordance with the electrical engineering job projects and drawings and works with engineering to find solutions to any unforeseen field changes
Notes and completes all end of project redline as-built drawings and documentation for engineering and GIS use and master repository functions
Enforces departmental safety adherence to City and DME safety rules and regulations and instructs team members on proper work procedures
Readily available and willing to perform periodic overtime work and will maintains reasonable contact to keep department, system operators and management up to date on project statuses
or any items of concern
Portrays a positive image to employees, customers, developers, contractors and the general public at all times
Assigns daily crew activities
Ensures compliance to local and state electrical codes and regulations by reviewing diagrams, reports, and on-site work
Performs other duties normally assigned to other work team members in their absence
Troubleshoots the electric system and makes needed repairs in a safe and cost-effective manner
Requests materials and supplies that are necessary to safe construct and perform their daily and project functions
Constantly updates and keeps supervisor informed of crews activity and provides weekly reports
Completes employee Performance Evaluation assessments including any required IDP and status sheet updates or adjustments
Follows and applies appropriate City of Denton and DME corrective disciplinary actions when needed
Will mentor and assist Apprentices through Journeyman Lineman, making sure that they progress through the Department of Labor approved apprenticeship program in a timely manner
Effectively works with electric distribution customers, developers, and contractors both internal and external to schedule and safely construct all electric facilities in a timely and
efficient manner
Demonstrates computer and software proficiency on the City of Denton and DME software packages used
Assist with providing presentations at Department, City and Public meetings as requested
Demonstrated ability to respectfully get along with customers and co-workers
Regular and punctual attendance
Demonstrates CPR, First Aid and ability to perform pole top and bucket truck rescue and to follow all DME and APPA safety rules and regulations

Minimum Qualifications / Acceptable Equivalency:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Seven years of electric utility experience in installation and maintenance of electric mechanical equipment with at least 4 years directly involved with Electric Substation and Switchyards
Possess a Class “B” Department of Labor for Substation Electrician certification
OR
Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job
Core Competencies:
Ability to read, interpret, and construct new electric facilities from engineering blue prints or job work orders and document any and all adjustments that were necessary and approved
to complete the project
Ability to direct and lead the electric utility construction work crews in the safe construction and maintenance of electric substations in Denton
Conditions of Employment:
Must have a valid Class “C” Driver’s License prior to employment
Must obtain a Texas Class A CDL driver’s license within 60 days of employment
Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check
Must be able to respond to call-in within 30 minutes and be responsible for call when your name comes up on rotation list
Ability to read, understand, and follow departmental safety rules and safe work procedures
Ability to work courteously with other employees and customers
Ability to work within enclosed spaces
Ability to lead others in job related matters
Applicants must be available to be on stand-by and work emergency call-outs

The essential functions of this position require the daily use of various types of hand and power tools. Requires the ability to work in adverse weather conditions and wear protective
gear such as steel toe boots, gloves, hard hat, safety goggles, and hearing protection. The essential functions of this position require the use of tractors, trenchers, backhoes, and
mowers; volt meters, ammeters, and related electrical and/or pneumatic testing apparatus.
Environmental Factors:
The essential functions of this position are primarily performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions but does require some office and documentation time.
