Building Inspector I - GT0733 - BUILDING INSPECTIONS City of Denton Job Description Title: Building Inspector I Position ID: GT0733-220100 Department/Division: Development Services/Building Inspections Reports to: Building Inspector Supervisor FLSA Designation: Non-Exempt Safety Sensitive: Yes DOT: No Definition: Responsible for performing field inspections related to all phases of building construction for compliance with approved plans, specifications, codes, and ordinances. Essential Job Functions: Performs Residential, Light Commercial and Certificate of Occupancy inspections on existing buildings Maintains records, and submits daily inspection reports Assists with landscape inspections at residential properties Confers with contractors and general public to explain codes Performs daily inspections relating to the Denton Development Code, IRC, IECC, NEC, and some IBC, IMC, IPC, and IFGC, as adopted and amended by the City of Denton in a fast-paced high growth environment Maintains regular and punctual on-site attendance Additional Duties: Performs other duties as assigned Assists other City Departments as needed Minimum Qualifications/Acceptable Equivalency: High school diploma or GED equivalent One year of experience in a skilled trade (framing, electrical, plumbing or mechanical) OR Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job Core Competencies: Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with coworkers and customers Knowledge of the International Building Codes and the National Electrical Code Preferences: Texas State Plumbing Inspectors License Master or Journeyman Electrical license Master or Journeyman Plumbing license ICC Certified Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner Additional Model Code Certifications Bilingual in Spanish and English Conditions of Employment: Must have and maintain a valid Class “C” Driver’s License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law) Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check Shall pass a physical examination Shall pass the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners exam for a Texas State Plumbing Inspector’s license within 18 months of employment Shall pass the ICC Certification exams to be a Residential Energy Code Inspector/Plans Examiner within 18 months of employment Must be able to work overtime when requested and be available for on-call duty Physical Requirements: Overall Strength Demands: The italicized word describes the overall strength demand of the functions performed by the incumbent during a typical workday.
