Heavy Equipment Operator II - GL0711 - SOLID WASTE-PROCESSING, MINING City of Denton Job Description  Title: Heavy Equipment Operator II – Solid Waste/Processing/Mining Position ID: GL0711 Department/Division: Solid Waste/Landfill Reports to: Field Services Supervisor FLSA Designation: Non-Exempt Safety Sensitive: Yes DOT: Yes Definition: Responsible for the safe and effective operation of heavy equipment Essential Functions: Expertly operates several types of motorized construction/maintenance equipment typically over 26,000 GVW (i.e. excavators, soil/landfill compactor, motor graders, rubber tire loader, track loader, skid loader, bulldozers, water tankers, articulating dump trucks, sorting stations, trommels, grinders, shredder material handling conveyors and equipment) to excavate, move and/or grade material.   Responsible for doing finishing grade work on projects. Ability to use rotary laser and optical level for grade control. Ability to understand site work grading plans. Performs skilled tasks associated with equipment operation and operates smaller equipment as needed when working on or around utilities or tight spaces Performs pre-inspections and post-inspections of all equipment and trucks before and after use; performs maintenance activities and cleaning of equipment, and reports problems to supervisor Transports heavy equipment and materials to and from job site May perform other skilled tasks, some of which may require knowledge of a specific field Assists Supervisor in training subordinates in the best and safest methods May assist Supervisor in planning, scheduling and supervising the work of others. May assist Supervisor in entering daily work orders May assume responsibility in the absence of Supervisor, coordinating the activities of temporary labor workers, field services workers and other equipment operations May confer with customers, contractors and vendors regarding service problems and reports information obtained to supervisor Maintains on-call availability for after hour emergencies. Reads and understands reference books and manuals and current industry operational practices Additional Duties: Performs other duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications/Acceptable Equivalency: High school diploma or GED equivalent 5 – 8 years of experience in operation and maintenance of heavy equipment used in the construction, maintenance and repair function operations Class A CDL or ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment Core Competencies: Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with coworkers and customers Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. repeatedly Ability to calmly think through stressful situations Ability to make sound decisions Ability to change duties throughout the day Ability to complete tasks with minimal supervision Ability to provide exceptional customer service Ability to operate an onboard GPS unit Ability to read a map to navigate the City of Denton Knowledge of pneumatics and hydraulics Conditions of Employment: Must have a valid Class "C" Driver's License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class "C" driver's license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 30 days of hire per state law) Must pass a drug test, driver's license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check Must pass a physical examination Must be able to work overtime when requested including weekends and evenings Must possess a current, valid Class "A" CDL Driver's License with Air Brake endorsement prior to employment Preferences: Prior solid waste experience Bilingual in Spanish and English Physical Requirements: Overall Strength Demands: The italicized word describes the overall strength demand of the functions performed by the incumbent during a typical workday.
