Wastewater Collection Operator II - GL0742-640200 City of Denton Job Description  Title: Wastewater Collection Operator II Position ID: GL0742-640200 Department/Division: Wastewater Collections Reports to: Field Services Supervisor FLSA Designation: Non-Exempt Safety Sensitive: Yes DOT: Yes Definition: Responsible for the maintenance, repair, and installation of wastewater collection system Essential Functions: Expertly operates several types of motorized construction/maintenance equipment typically over 26,000 GVW (i.e. excavators, rollers, blades, rubber tire loader, front-end loader, track loader, skid loader, compactors) to excavate, move and/or grade material.   Performs skilled tasks associated with equipment operation and operates smaller equipment as needed when working on or around utilities or tight spaces Performs pre-inspections and post-inspections of all equipment and trucks before and after use; performs minor maintenance activities and cleaning of equipment, and reports problems to supervisor Transports heavy equipment and materials to and from job site May perform other skilled tasks, some of which may require knowledge of a specific field Assists Crew Leader in training subordinates in the best and safest methods May assist Crew Leader in planning, scheduling and supervising the work of others May assist Crew Leader in entering daily work orders May assume responsibility in the absence of Crew Leader, coordinating the activities of field services workers and other equipment operations May confer with customers regarding service problems and reports information obtained to supervisor Maintains on-call availability for after hour emergencies Reads and understands reference books and manuals and current industry operational practices Must be able to work in confined spaces such as manholes and trenches Maintains regular and punctual on-site attendance Additional Duties: Performs other duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications / Acceptable Equivalency: High school diploma or GED equivalent 2 years of experience in operation and maintenance of heavy equipment Class A CDL or ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment OR Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job Core Competencies: Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with coworkers and customers Ability to read and write in order to prepare reports such as, after-hour call log sheets and work orders; daily time sheets and evaluation of subordinates  Ability to use laser and transit level for grade control. Ability read understand utility construction plans. Preferences: Current Wastewater Collections Experience Current Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License Prior municipal experience Current experience in the construction of water and wastewater lines Conditions of Employment: Must possess and maintain a valid Class “A” CDL driver’s license with tanker endorsements OR must possess a valid Class C driver license with a good driving record and the ability to obtain a Class A CDL with Tank Vehicle endorsement within six (6) months of employment Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check Must pass a physical examination Must be able to work overtime when requested Must be able to work a flexible schedule that may include nights and weekends Obtain a valid Unit II Wastewater Collections Certification from TCEQ within 18 months of employment Physical Requirements: O verall Strength Demands: The italicized word describes the overall strength demand of the functions performed by the incumbent during a typical workday.
