Water Utility Safety Coordinatore - GP3218-640200 City of Denton Job Description  Title: Water Utility Safety Coordinator Position ID: GP3218-640200 Department/Division: Water Utilities Reports to: Superintendent of Wastewater Collections FLSA Designation: Exempt Safety Sensitive: Yes DOT: No Definition: Responsible for promoting Safety in Utilities Departments by conducting Safety & Training meetings, Hazard analysis and safety prevention techniques. Essential Functions: Prepares and conducts monthly departmental safety and training meetings to ensure that work is performed to standards and that losses may be reduced. Monitors employees for compliance and is familiar with City of Denton policies and General, Construction, and Utility Industry Standards and Regulations. Coordinates and provides safety meetings for work groups and schedules some of the training with vendors. Provides training for work groups to ensure safe operation of equipment and personal protective equipment including but not limited to: Defensive Driving, CPR/AED/First Aid, Confined Space, Trench Safety, Lock Out Tag Out, Hazcom (GHS), Fire Extinguisher, etc. Provide vehicle inspections per state and federal regulatory guidelines. Visits field crews to ensure job site safety and observes employee behavior and performance to confirm compliance with applicable safety rules (use of PPE, ladders, correct tools, etc.) Responds to emergency accident sites to ensure the employee is safe and taken care of; inspects the site and/or recommends changes for future safety. Performs jobsite safety audits to determine safe work practices and regulatory compliance. Provides a variety of technical assistance and safety advice to departments. Assists Safety Department in accident investigations to determine incident patterns and remedies to eliminate recurrences Maintains utility training computerized database. Research and recommend new PPE, tooling, and other equipment for respective departments when requested. Assist Safety Department in verification and data collection/tracking for annual safety incentive program. Inspects safety equipment to ensure that it is in good working condition. Participate in weekly staff meetings with the City of Denton’s Safety Department. Maintains regular and punctual on-site attendance. Additional Duties: Performs other duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications/Acceptable Equivalency: High school diploma or GED equivalency Seven (7) years’ experience or a strong Safety background working in utility, construction and heavy equipment operation. OR Bachelor’s degree in Health and Safety, Behavior Analysis or equivalent Three (3) years utility experience. Core Competencies: Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with coworkers and customers. The ability to stay current with the standards that relate to General, and Construction Industries as well as the MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices). Preferences: Prior experience in municipal government water utility safety & training field. Knowledge in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Power point, Microsoft Picture Knowledge in the use of training equipment such as AED, Projectors, CPR mannequins, Defensive driving instruction. Knowledge in soil mechanics, trench protective systems, and performing work within confined spaces. OSHA 30 certified Excavation and confined space competent person certified Conditions of Employment: Must have and maintain a valid Class “C” Driver’s License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law).
