General Information & Status Updates
A. Animal Services Donation Station – A donation station was recently established at the
Linda McNatt Animal Care & Adoption Center to provide pet owners and adopters with up to three (3) free items they may need to care for their animals. Animal Services frequently receives an excess of donated items that have accumulated over time and currently represent a surplus of inventory. The donated items consist mainly of small
blankets, leashes, harnesses, pet bedding, food, animal carriers, and enrichment toys that are in good condition but not usable by the department. The redistribution of these items, when available, is a practical and a community-oriented solution. Staff contact: Monica Benavides, Animal Services
B. Fire Department Annual Report – The Fire Department is pleased to release the 2023 Denton Fire Department Annual Report. This report highlights call volume, incident statistics, department achievements, and other notable events. Staff contact: Kenneth Hedges, Fire
Responses to Council Member Requests for Information
A. Proposed Median Opening on Bonnie Brae – On Feb. 23, Mayor Hudspeth forwarded a resident’s inquiry regarding a potential median opening on Bonnie Brae Street. Staff is currently investigating potential solutions and will provide a response in the coming weeks.

B. Denia Residents’ Concerns – On Feb. 27, Council Member Meltzer forwarded questions raised at the Feb. 26 Denia neighborhood meeting regarding the timing of the roadway project on Roselawn Drive, along with a request for the developer to secure the trash and
debris generated from the construction. The roadway project on Roselawn Drive is part of
the Eagle Creek Forestar Development, which is expected to be completed in early Summer 2024. Staff communicated trash and debris shall be collected and properly disposed daily. City inspection staff will continue to monitor the site. Staff contact: Trevor Crain, Capital Projects
C. Federal Budget Earmark Requests – On March 1, Council Member McGee requested information regarding earmark requests submitted by the City of Denton for federal funding. Earmarks, also known as “congressionally directed spending” or “community project funding,” allow legislators to allocate funding to specific projects in their districts.
The practice of earmarks was discontinued in 2011 and reinstated by Congress in 2021.
Individual Congressional members retain the discretion to establish their office policies regarding earmark requests, and until recently, none of the Denton delegation members accepted earmark requests. Therefore, the City of Denton has not been able to participate in the earmark process since it’s reinstatement. With Rep. Ronny Jackson's recent gain of
a part of Denton in redistricting, the City has an opportunity to participate in the process.
Staff will be actively engaging in the FY25 earmark request process by submitting three proposals to Rep. Ronny Jackson's office and will provide additional updates as the federal budget process continues. Staff contact: Kristi Fogle, City Manager’s Office
