General Information & Status Updates
A. Construction on Riney Road – Due to weather delays, construction on Riney Road will not
be fully completed before the start of the Denton ISD school year on Aug. 12. To ensure student safety, temporary sidewalks and crosswalks will be installed at Hardaway Road for students to cross from the north side of Riney Road to the new shared-use path on the south side. This are expected to be in place by the first day of school.
For the safety of drivers and students, access to Reeves Elementary will only be available
from Discovery Boulevard and US-77/Elm Street from Aug. 12-20. All driveways directly in front of the school will remain open. The City anticipates Riney Road will reopen to vehicular traffic by Aug. 20. City staff has partnered with Denton ISD to inform parents, guardians, and staff of this
updated timeline. Information has also been posted on Nextdoor for neighborhoods
surrounding Reeves Elementary. For future updates on this project, please visit the Bonnie Brae Street Project Discuss Denton page. Staff contact: Seth Garcia, Capital Projects

B. Texas Public Power Association Recognizes Mayor Hudspeth – The Texas Public Power Association (TPPA) recognized Mayor Hudspeth with their Public Service Award during
TPPA’s annual conference July 14-16. The association acknowledged the Mayor for his
contributions on the American Public Power Association’s (APPA) Policy Makers’ Council where he worked behind the
scenes to raise awareness of
electrical supply chain issues. His work led to the involvement of Senator Ted Cruz, which ultimately influenced the
Department of Energy’s Energy
Efficiency Standards which will ease supply chain issues, lower utility bills, and cut energy waste and carbon pollution. Staff
contact: Tony Puente, Denton Municipal Electric
C. Mayor’s Pet Spotlight – McDonald is ‘ba da ba ba ba I'm lovin' life’ and is eager to share his joy with you. At just three years old and weighing 60 pounds, this shepherd mix adores the company of other dogs. Having enjoyed a few overnight stays with volunteers, he has
proven himself to be both crate-trained and potty-trained. His intelligence and energy shine through, and with the right stimulation, he finds tranquility. He loves to run and understands the word "no". While he may nip at the leash, with patience and effort, he will thrive in his forever
home. Some of McDonald's favorite things are:
• Watching Bluey
• Running
• Playing with other dogs
• Freeze-dried salmon treats
• Learning new tricks
Meet McDonald today or keep missing out on this perfect dog. Please contact Denton Animal Services
by phone at (940) 349-7594, or via email at
Animal.Services@cityofdenton.com. Staff contact: Bailey Coleson, Animal Services

D. West Nile Virus Risk Level 4 – On Aug. 7, the City was notified of two locations that have the presence of West Nile Virus in trapped mosquitoes. While the probability of human
outbreak is moderate to high, individuals over 50 years old and those with compromised
immune systems are at a higher risk of severe illness if infected with West Nile virus. Symptoms may include fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, nausea, drowsiness, stiff neck, vision problems, body tremors, mental confusion, memory loss, and seizures. While most people infected with West Nile virus will show no symptoms and recover on their
own, those experiencing concerning symptoms should contact their healthcare provider
immediately. For more information on prevention and safety tips, visit Mosquito Safety | Denton, TX (cityofdenton.com). Staff contact: Michael Gange, Environmental Services and Sustainability
Responses to Council Member Requests for Information A. Neighborhoods 2 & 6 Update – On Aug. 4, Mayor Pro Tem Rumohr requested a construction update for Neighborhoods 2 & 6. Package one was completed in March, while packages two and three remain under construction with an estimated completion of Q4
2026. Several streets have been delayed due to weather and utility conflicts. While Aileen Street, Scripture Street, and Congress Street have been delayed due to Atmos gas line conflicts. Staff is working closely with Atmos to resolve these conflicts and limit disruption. The surface lift of asphalt will be placed on Aileen Street and Crescent Street (Carroll Boulevard to Bolivar Street) the week of Aug. 11. Improving weather will help to
expedite completion of street segments currently under construction. A full list of street segments currently under construction can be found on the Discuss Denton page. Staff contact: Scott Fettig, Capital Projects
B. North Lakes Recreation Center Stop Signs – On July 18, Council Member Beck shared resident feedback about the crosswalk stop bar placement north of the recreation center. Staff audited this location and plans to implement the following improvements.
• Implement All-Way Stop Control at the intersection of W Windsor Drive and the
North Lakes Park Recreation Center.
• Move the east-facing stop sign and stop bar to the east side of the crosswalk.
• Remove the pedestrian push buttons and activated lights, as they are no longer
necessary. These devices will be repurposed at other uncontrolled pedestrian crossing locations.
