Instructor IV - SA4000 - REC-LS-NORTH LAKES REC CTR Group ExerciseEffective Date: 9/23/2016  Revision Date: 12/22/2020  Position ID: SA4000  Career Ladder: SA  FLSA Designation: Non-Exempt   City of Denton Title: Instructor IV – Group Exercise Instructor  Department/Division: Parks & Recreation Department  Reports to: Recreation Specialist     Job Description Definition: Responsible for leading a group of participants through a series of movements and exercises set to music while inspiring and motivating them to improve their health and fitness-related behaviors. Essential Functions: Assists in maintaining current class records (i.e. attendance, accident and incident reports, etc.) Reporting safety concerns regarding facility and equipment Assists with class coverage outside of regularly scheduled classes Ensures the safety of class participants by adhering to center policies and procedures and by following guidelines set by program certifying agency Additional Duties: Become familiar with City of Denton and recreation center operational polices in order to provide customer assistance as needed Assist with fitness programing Minimum Qualifications / Acceptable Equivalency: Must be 18 years old or older Hold an Adult CPR/AED certification through American Red Cross or American Heart Association Hold a specialty certificate for a specific group exercise format or a nationally recognized Group Exercise Instructor Certification Core Competencies: Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with coworkers and participants Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance Ability to move rhythmically to the beat of the music and to incorporate optimal usage of cueing, tempo, choreography, and safe transitional movements from one pattern to another. Ability to maintain the proper technique, endurance, and level of energy needed to complete each fitness class Possess a proficient working knowledge of human anatomy, exercise physiology, and physical fitness training principles. Ability to stay within a scope-of-practice of qualifications when giving advice and recommendations to class participants. Conditions of Employment: Must have a valid Class “C” Driver’s License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 30 days of hire per state law) Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check Must pass physical examination Retain all certifications required for the position Retain any continuing education subscriptions required to keep certifications valid Provide legally purchased music licensed for group exercise instruction   Must be available 15 minutes before and after class to set-up/take-down and answer participant’s questions and to maintain a positive exercise experience Hold an Adult CPR/AED certification through American Red Cross or American Heart Association Hold a specialty certificate for a specific group exercise format or a nationally recognized Group Exercise Instructor Certification Must be able to work evenings and weekends as needed Preferences: Two (2) years’ experience as a group exercise instructor ACE Group Fitness Instructor, AFAA Primary Group Exercise Instructor, or ACSM Group Exercise certification Qualified to teach one or more Les Mills™ or SilverSneakers® specialty certification Advanced specialty group exercise qualification Associates or Bachelor’s degree in health, exercise science, recreation or physical activity related field Physical Requirements: Overall Strength Demands: The italicized word describes the overall strength demand of the functions performed by the incumbent during a typical workday.
