B.Backfilling and compacting for utilities outside the building to utility main connections. C.Filling holes, pits, and excavations generated as a result of removal (demolition) operations. 1.02 RELATED REQUIREMENTS A.Section 31 2200 - Grading: Site grading. 1.03 PRICE AND PAYMENT PROCEDURES A.See Section 01 2200 - Unit Prices, for general requirements applicable to unit prices for earthwork. 1.04 DEFINITIONS A.Finish Grade Elevations: Indicated on drawings. 1.05 REFERENCE STANDARDS A.ASTM C136/C136M - Standard Test Method for Sieve Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregates; 2014. B.ASTM D698 - Standard Test Methods for Laboratory Compaction Characteristics of Soil Using Standard Effort (12,400 ft-lbf/ft3 (600 kN-m/m3)); 2012, with Editorial Revision (2015). C.ASTM D2487 - Standard Practice for Classification of Soils for Engineering Purposes (Unified Soil Classification System); 2011. 1.06 SUBMITTALS A.See Section 01 3000 - Administrative Requirements, for submittal procedures. B.Product Data for Manufactured Fill. C.Soil Samples: 10 pounds sample of each type of fill; submit in air-tight containers to testing laboratory. D.Materials Sources: Submit name of imported materials source. E.Compaction Density Test Reports. 1.07 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A.When necessary, store materials on site in advance of need. B.When fill materials need to be stored on site, locate stockpiles where indicated. 1.Separate differing materials with dividers or stockpile separately to prevent intermixing. 2.Prevent contamination. 3.Protect stockpiles from erosion and deterioration of materials. C.Manufactured Fill - Geofoam: Review manufacturer's care and handling instructions. Prevent damage to material during delivery, storage, and construction activity. 1.Cover stored geofoam with opaque material when geofoam will exposed to sunlight for more than six months. 2.Protect material from organic solvents, petroleum-based solvents, and open flame. 3.Follow manufacturer's written procedures for handling and installation of geofoam material. 4.Do not place heavy construction equipment or vehicles directly onto geofoam material. 5.Replace geofoam material damaged when by construction equipment or activity, or repair according to manufacturer's written repair criteria and procedures. 17190 / American Legion Senior Center 31 2323 - 2 FILL PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.01 FILL MATERIALS A.General Fill: Complying with State of Texas Highway Department standard. B.Granular Fill - Gravel : Pit run washed stone; free of shale, clay, friable material and debris. 1.Graded in accordance with ASTM D2487 Group Symbol GW. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.01 EXAMINATION A.Identify required lines, levels, contours, and datum locations. B.Verify areas to be filled are not compromised with surface or ground water. 3.02 PREPARATION A.Scarify and proof roll subgrade surface to a depth of 6 inches to identify soft spots. B.Cut out soft areas of subgrade not capable of compaction in place. Backfill with general fill. C.Compact subgrade to density equal to or greater than requirements for subsequent fill material. D.Until ready to fill, maintain excavations and prevent loose soil from falling into excavation. 3.03 FILLING A.Fill to contours and elevations indicated using unfrozen materials. B.Employ a placement method that does not disturb or damage other work. C.Do not use any sand as fill under pavement. D.Any imported fill must be approved by the Engineer. E.Slope grade away from building minimum 2 inches in 10 feet, unless noted otherwise. Make gradual grade changes. Blend slope into level areas. F.Correct areas that are over-excavated. G.Compaction Density Unless Otherwise Specified or Indicated: 1.Under paving, slabs-on-grade, and similar construction: 95 percent of maximum dry density. 2.At other locations: 90 percent of maximum dry density. H.Reshape and re-compact fills subjected to vehicular traffic. I.Maintain temporary means and methods, as required, to remove all water while fill is being placed as required, or until directed by the Architect. Remove and replace soils deemed unsuitable by classification and which are excessively moist due to lack of dewatering or surface water control. 3.04 FILL AT SPECIFIC LOCATIONS A.Use general fill unless otherwise specified or indicated in the drawings. 3.05 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A.See Section 01 4000 - Quality Requirements, for general requirements for field inspection and testing.
