SUBJECT
Consider adoption of an ordinance of the City of Denton, a Texas home-rule municipal corporation,
authorizing the City Manager to execute a contract with Samsara Inc. for a product demonstration for the
Solid Waste Department; and providing an effective date (File 8012 – for a 90 day term). The Public
Utilities Board recommends approval (6 - 0).
INFORMATION/BACKGROUND
Samsara is an IT company that specializes in cloud-based video across a range of industries including
transportation, construction, field services, utilities and energy, government, healthcare and education,
manufacturing, and food and beverage. The Solid Waste (SW) Department would like a live product
demonstration for its fleet of landfill and collections vehicles.
The SW Department has a fleet of 80 plus collections vehicles that operate 4 to 7 days a week, from 4:00
a.m. to as late as 11:00 p.m. With recent growth, Denton has seen the demand for solid waste services
increase, resulting in greater vehicular traffic and additional collections vehicles on the road. Approximately
90 percent of SW’s fleet have blind-spot/reverse cameras to assist the operator, but no more than 30 percent
have onboard playback and storage capability. Onboard video dash camera systems provide an unbiased
review of facts in cases of an accident, injury, or other vehicle-related incidents. The information provided
will be used for safety training and risk assessments as part of the review process.
This request for a demonstration in no way constitutes an agreement to purchase or enter into an agreement
with Samsara. The standard procurement process will apply if the department decides to move forward with
this or any similar systems.
PRIOR ACTION/REVIEW (COUNCIL, BOARDS, COMMISSIONS)
On July 25, 2022, the Public Utilities Board (PUB) recommended this item to the City Council for
consideration.
