AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF DENTON, TEXAS ALLOWING THE CLOSURE OF
PORTIONS OF AVENUE C ON MONDAYS THROUGH FRIDAYS FROM 7 30 AM
UNTIL 3 00 P M WHEN PEDESTRIAN OR VEHICULAR SAFETY REQUIRE CLOSURE
DURING THE FALL 1998 SEMESTER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS,
PROHIBITING THE OPERATION OF A NON -EMERGENCY VEHICLE ON CLOSED
PORTIONS OF AVENUE C DURING THE TIMES THE STREET IS CLOSED, PROVIDING
A SAVINGS CLAUSE, PROVIDING A SEVERABILITY CLAUSE, PROVIDING A
PENALTY NOT TO EXCEED TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS, AND DECLARING AN
EFFECTIVE DATE
WHEREAS, the closure of a portion of Avenue C on Mondays through Fridays from
7 30 a in until 3 00 p in when classes are in session at the University of North Texas and when
pedestrian or vehicular traffic indicate closure is necessary for safety, and
WHEREAS, it is determined to be in the best interests of the citizens of the City of
Denton to allow closure of this portion of Avenue C during the times specified above when
necessary for safety, NOW, THEREFORE,
THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DENTON HEREBY ORDAINS
SECTION I That portions of Avenue C from its intersection with West Hickory Street
to its intersection with Highland Street may be closed every Monday through Friday from 7 30
a in until 3 00 p in when classes are in session at the University of North Texas if pedestrian or
vehicular traffic indicate closure is necessary for safety during the Fall 1998 semester at the
University of North Texas This ordinance shall be reviewed by the City Council after the end of
the Fall 1998 semester
SECTION II. That even during periods when portions of Avenue C are closed, traffic
travelling on Chestnut, Sycamore, and Mulberry Streets will be able to cross Avenue C because
the intersections of these streets and Avenue C will not be closed
SECTION III, When traffic control devices are in place giving notice of Avenue C's
closure, no person shall operate a motor vehicle other than an authorized emergency vehicle on
the closed portions of Avenue C
SECTION IV That all provisions of the ordinances of the City of Denton in conflict
with the provisions of this ordinance are hereby repealed, and all other provisions of the
ordinances of the City of Denton, not in conflict with the provisions of this ordinance, shall
remain in full force and effect
SECTION V That if any provision of this ordinance or application thereof to any person
or circumstance is held invalid, such invalidity shall not affect the other provisions or
applications, and to this end the provisions of this ordinance are severable
SECTIQN-13L Any person adjudged guilty of violating this ordinance shall be guilty of a
misdemeanor and punished by a fine not to exceed Two Hundred Dollars ($200 00)
SECTION VII. That this ordinance shall become effective fourteen (14) days from the
date of its passage, and the City Secretary Is hereby directed to cause the caption of this
ordinance to be published twice in the Denton Record -Chronicle, the official newspaper of the
City of Denton, Texas, within ten (10) days of the date of its passage
