HomeMy WebLinkAbout1987-2170923L NO'�c/ Z AN ORDINANCE AUTHORIZING THE EXECUTION OF A CHANGE ORDER TO A CONTRACT BETWEEN THE CITY OF DENTON AND TONTO CONSTRUCTION, INC , AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE WHEREAS, on February 17, 1987, the City awarded a contract for the construction of certain improvements to the Water Treatment Plant Upgrade Phase II, Bid No 9657, and WHEREAS, the City Manager having recommended to the Council that a change order be authorized to amend such contract and said change order being in compliance with the requirements of art 2368a, V A C S , NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DENTON SECTION I That the change order to the contract between the City and Tonto Construction, Inc in the amount of Twenty-nine Thousand Eight Hundred and Two Dollars and Fourteen Cents ($29,802 14) is hereby approved and the expenditure of funds therefor is hereby authorized SECTION II That this ordinance shall become effective immediately upon its passage and approval PASSED AND APPROVED this the 1st day of December, 1987 ATTEST IN W ^ APPROVED AS TO LEGAL FORM DEBRA ADAMI DRAYOVITCH, CITY ATTORNEY �l�1111 �Z ,, 1 i /L_! Purchasing Agent Dec( 5er 1, 1987 CITY COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM TO CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC UTILITIES BOARD FROM R E Nelson, Executive Director of Utilities SUBJECT CHANGE ORDER #6- (Caustic Tank-TONTO CONSTRUCTION INC) WATER TREATMENT PLANT RECOMMENDATION The Public Utilities Board, at their meeting of November 18, 1987, recommended to the City Council approval of the attached change order #6 concerning replacement of a caustic tank in conjunction with Phase II Upgrade of the Denton Water Treatment Plant Project in the amount of $29,802 14 SUMMARY: The existing fiberglass sodium hydroxide tank has been seriously leaking after several attempts at repairs by the tank manufacturer The existing tank needs to be replaced by a polyethylene tank of the same size and capacity as soon as possible BACKGROUND In 1981, a fiberglass tank was installed at the Water Treatment Plant for the purpose of changing over to liquid sodium hydroxide (caustic) for adjusting the Ph of water in the treatment process Since that time, the fiberglass tank has been subjected to this highly corrosive chemical and has not withstood the deterioration even after several repairs were made by the tank manufacturer Since that time, the water treatment industry has developed a more chemically inert tank using polyethylene Polyethylene does not react with sodium hydroxide and has been found to be highly suitable for containing this highly corrosive chemical The Utilities Staff needs to get this unsatisfactory tank replaced at this time by Tonto Construction Company as a part of the Water Treatment Plant Phase II upgrade contract This tank is in danger of rupture which could result in a possible shutdown of the Water Treatment Plant 5168U 9 Page 2 A second tank of polyethylene material has recently been installed by Tonto Construction Company as part of this project However, the Utilities Staff thought that the existing fiberglass tank could be salvaged by further repairs which has proven not to be the case PROGRAMS, DEPARTMENTS OR GROUPS AFFECTED City of Denton, Denton Municipal Utilities, Engineers and Contractors, and the citizens F15CAL IMPACT: Previous Contract Amount $30618,309 27 Net increase in contract amt 1 for tank $29,802 l4 Revised Contract Amount $3,648,11 1 41 Net change in contract time of completion- no change ec/tf/idly submitted, v loyd Harrell City Manager Prepared & Approved by: X21-9 �ol-- E Nelson, Executive Director Department of Utilities Exhibit I Change Order #6 Minutes PUB Meeting of 11/18/87 5168U:9.10 Con r...o consCrucCion Inc GENERAL AND HEAVY CONSTRUCTION TC 114-042 October 14, 1987 Mr C David Ham, P E Director of Water h Wastewater Utilities Service Center/Warehouse 901-A Texas Street Denton, Texas 76201 RE Denton Water Treatment Plant Upgrade -
