After determining that a quorum is present, the City of Denton City Council will convene in a Regular Meeting on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 215 E. McKinney Street, Denton, Texas at which the following items will be considered: 1. Pledge of Allegiance A. U. S. Flag B. Texas Flag "Honor the Texas Flag - I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one and indivisible." 2. Consider adoption of an ordinance canvassing the returns and declaring the results of the Regular Municipal Election to elect City Council Members to Districts 1, 2, 3, and 4 of the City Council of the City of Denton, Texas held in the City of Denton on May 14, 2011; and providing an effective date. 3. Oath of Office administered to newly elected Council Members. 4. Election of Mayor Pro Tempore. 5. Consider approval of Resolution of Appreciation for retiring Council Member. BACKGROUND Adoption of this ordinance will formally canvass the election returns of the regular election for council members in Districts 1, 2, 3, and 4 held on May 14, 2011. AN ORDINANCE CANVASSING THE RETURNS AND DECLARING THE RESULTS OF THE REGULAR MUNICIPAL ELECTION TO ELECT FOUR CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS TO DISTRICTS 1, 2, 3, AND 4 OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DENTON, TEXAS HELD IN THE CITY OF DENTON ON MAY 14, 2011; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DENTON HEREBY ORDAINS: SECTION 1. The City Council finds and declares that the May 14, 2011 regular municipal election was duly ordered for the purpose of electing Council Members to Districts 1, 2, 3, and 4; that proper notice of said election was duly given and election officials appointed; that the election was duly held and the returns of the election officials have been delivered to the Council, all in accordance with the laws of the State of Texas and the Charter and ordinances of the City of Denton. SECTION 2. The official returns of the election officials having been opened, examined, and canvassed, and the Council hereby finds and declares that 2,152 ballots were cast at the election, and that the votes cast for each District on the Council were as follows: EARLY VOTING: FOR DISTRICT 1: Eliborio "Eli Gemini" Beltran 2 votes Damon J. The Council finds and declares that each candidate listed below received a majority of the votes cast for each District on the Council and that each candidate listed below is hereby declared to be elected to the City Council of the City of Denton: FOR DISTRICT 1: FOR DISTRICT 2: FOR DISTRICT 3: FOR DISTRICT 4: Kevin Roden Dalton Gregory Jim Engelbrecht Chris Watts and the candidates shall assume the duties of their office on the date that they take the official oath of office. SECTION 4. The City Council has found and determined that the meeting at which this Ordinance is considered is open to the public and that notice thereof was given in accordance with provisions of the Texas open meetings law, Tex. Gov't Code ch. 551, as amended, and that a quorum of the City Council was present. SECTION 5. This Ordinance shall become effective immediately upon its passage and approval.
