SPECIFICATIONS
For 26,000 Pound Steam Road Roller.
Main Driving The main driving wheels are 72 inches in diameter with 22 inch face,
Wheels having twelve wrought iron spokes 3 inches wide and I inch thick cast into
the hub and rim. The hub is fitted with two driving pin holes. The driving
wheels overlap the front wheels 41 inches on each side. The total rolling,
width is 76 inches. The greatest compression exerted by this roller in
working condition, with water tank half full, is Soo pounds per square inch;
Each driving wheel is pierced with 24 holes placed zig-zag to receive as
many forged steel spikes, which project 31 inches from the face of the
wheels. These spikes break up the surface of the hardest road and the whole
48 spikes can be used at one time.
Patent adjustable spring scrapers are fitted to the front and back of rear
rolls and they keep the rolls perfectly clean when all other makes of scrapers
fail. They may be put in or out of action instantly by the use of levers and
without moving or loosening a bolt.
Front Rollers The front rollers and cast steel saddle, mach ined.to fit the inside end of
the boiler accurately, constitute one of the strongest features of this machine.
This arrangement does not cut away the end of the boiler, shorten the smoke
box, or weaken the shell plate. It increases the strength of the shell plate,
and can be detached and replaced readily.
The steel swivel is another important feature. It is fitted with a swivel
block in such a manner as to permit the steering of the machine and accom.
modation to the inequalities of the road.
The front rollers have a diameter of 44 inches with 21 inch face. They
are placed together on the axle, but rotate independently of each other to
make steering easy. The hub of each wheel is fitted at both ends with gun
metal bushings, forming a large oil chamber between them, keeping the wheels
rill continuously lubricated. The front rollers cover the space between the main
driving wheels and overlap 41 inches on each side,
,f Boiler The boiler is of locomotive type, every seam double riveted (except the
smoke box tube plate), and Is jacketed. The shell .is 26 inches In diameter)
V,' inch thick, and is made of flange steel. It extends the whole length" o
the boiler, no transverse seam being made. The fire box is 36 inches long,
20 inches wide, 36 inches high inside, The side and end sheets slope unt-
? forrrily lhward front the bottom to the top at the rate of I inch per foot, giv`.ng
n wider water space at the top than at the bottom, permitting walet to
t' 'Circulate freely apnd proylding n better means of escApa for steam, Thar side
sheets and crown sheet are oi`~ Inch Range steel. Ih 0 Bute sleet .ni3 door
sheet are oft? inch flange steel. The whole of the fire box is stayed every 41
w. 'inches with best stay bolt iron I inch in diameter. The slde sheets are ex-
tended upwards and backwards, and to these extensions are riveted the cast
steel side brackets contaltiing the bearings for crank shaft, Intermediate shaft
y and train axle. These are 37 solid drawn seamless tubes, each So inches
long and a Inches in diameter. Water is supplied to the boiler by means of
two injectorsfitted with copper piping. 'A fusible plug Is fitted to the crown
sheet at the highest point.

Front ends of the side brackets are securely connected by the spectacle
plate extending completely across the boiler; the back ends are similarly con-
nected by the guard plate.
The spectacle plate is fitted with a strong nngle iron which encircles It
portion of the wagon top and to which it is securely rivited. A very strong
box is thus made in which the crank shat?, intermediate shafts and all Inter-
mediate gears are made to work between the bearings.
The mud ring is of the best wrought iron, z;j by 2 inches, forged solid.
Two brass wash-out plugs are fitted to the bottom of the water leg on
the right hand side, and one brass plug and blow-off cock on the left hand
side, and a z inch brass plug is fitted in boiler over front end of crown sheet.
A hand-hole is fitted in front flue sheet under the tubes for convenience in
washing out the entire length of boiler.
The ash pan is deep and has a damper on right hand side to facilitate
cleaning.
The rocking fire bars are made very deep and heavy to prevent twisting,
and are shaken by means of.-t small lever operated from the foot plate.
Water Tanks Two water tanks are fitted to this roller. The rear tank has a capacity of
t6o gallons. Its upper half provides a suitable foot plate for the operator and
a coal bunker of 450 pounds capacity. The front tank has a capacity of 130
gallons.
Foot Plate The patented foot plate gives the operator means of access and egress far
a`+ superior to the old style. The convenience of the coal banker and the hand!-
' ness of the tool box, which is attached to the rear of the tank, are points to
which we call speclal a:lention.
Draw Bar The draw bar extends completely across the back end of the rear tank, to
which it is securely fastened. A drop pin and shackle are provided for hitching
purposes, and can be used at either end or in the center of the draw bar.
Cylinder , The cylinder is fitted with piston of substantial design and a plain slide
valve. Ur, tsii f roller we have a special longitudinal compartment which tAkes
steam at both ends. Working steam is conveyed from this dry steam com-
partment to the cylinder by means of a separate pipe entirely detached from
the cylinder, but connected to it by means of a governor located on the top of
L
the cylinder. This independent steam pipe Is fitted with a plain throttle valve,
muffled pop safety valve and sight feed lubricator. The cross head, guides
and connecting rod with adjustable ends are of the most approved design.
The speed of the engine can be varied from r8o to 920 revolutions per
ti minute by adjusting the governor,
The crank shaft is a mild steel forging 3 inches in diameter with 5 inch
Crank Sluff
rf.^, throw, fitted with counterbahnee an cacti cheek. Single eccentric Is shrunk
on, No slipping of the eccentric can ever occur. Our reversible gear is of
the Marshall type, one eccentric only being used, It is the simplest and most
' accurate reversing gear In use, one eccentric, one eccentric strap, one valve rod
and one sling rod constitcte the whole gear. The crank shaft opening can be
disengaged from the main gearing by a sliding fork worked by it hand lever
tL ' and held in position by lock pin. This leaves the crank shaft and fly wheel
free to revolve.
~ . Bit>,d Wlkel A flange coupling is fitted to one end of the crank' shaft and brackets
securely fastened to the side sheets, to which an extension shaft and brackets
` Attatchhtatt
may be attached at any time for running stone crasher or other tight machinery.

eZittel Waring- gearing is of steel. The teeth are shaped on the involute system,
The saddle casting, axle boxes, driving centers, eccentric strap and side
brackets are all of the best quality cast steel.
Shafting All shafting is of steel running in gun metal and phosphor bronze bush-
ings. The main axle is s inches in diameter and runs in very long inter-
changeable brass bushings.
Compression grease cups are fitted to all the rapidly moving putts to
insure perfect lubrication.
Cab The cab completely covers the whole of the machine, and is fitted with
curt-ains at sides and ends.
Levers The levers are all operated from the foot plate.
Fittings The fittings are complete and consist of firing iron, steam jet for cleaning
flues, oil cans, wrenches, extra gauge glasses, fusible plugs, 48 spikes, and all
the necessary tools.
