Soil types range from deep sandy loam to rich black. Principal crops include cotton, corn, wheat, oats, hay, grain sorg- hums and peanuts, Crap growing predominates on the Blacklands in the east, and livestock-raising on the Grand Prairie in the west, Denton lies in the transition zone between the humid substopical region that extends northward from the Gulf of Mexico and the more continental climate to the north. Average annual rainfall is 31,67 inches, but monthly and annual amounts are quite variable. Most precipitation is derived from thundershowers, which are heavier and more frequent in April, May and June. August is the driest month and also the hottest. Relative humidity is highest during the early morning hours and lowest during the after- noon. Average annual relative humidity is about 65'%. with only slight variation from season to season. Achievement: Denton students achieve at or above national norms in terms of basic achievement. The Senior High School averages eight to ten National Merit Finalists each year. The vocational facilities at the high school are designated as an Area Vocational School by the State of Texas. i I HIGH SCHOOL AND JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL ATTENDANCE All high school age children attend the Denton Senior High School, Generally, all junior high children who live north of Highway 380 attend Strickland Junior High School,while those who live south of Highway 380 attend Congress Junior High School. Exceptions: children who live east of the TV railroad tracks and south of Highway 380 also attend Strickland Junior High School. ELEMENTARY ATTENDANCE Elementary children are expected to attend the elementary school nearest their homes although parents may request a transfer to another school prior to the time their child is enrolled for the year, However, if a transfer is granted, parents will be responsible for the child's transportation to and from school. Children are eligible to enter grade 1 if they are six years old on or before September 1.
