HomeMy WebLinkAboutNo Year 1607L R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, September 17, 1987 is the 200th Anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution; and WHEREAS, the Constitution, as ratified, embodies the ideals of liberty under law and was designed to maintain our free government in perpetuity as a more perfect union and to secure the blessings of liberty by consent of the governed; and WHEREAS, few governments in the world have been able to provide liberty and stability to their citizens under a written constitution for more than a generation; and i WHEREAS, the laws adopted under this charter of freedom and i the attractive way of life resulting have drawn to our shores citizens from every corner of the world, and provide impressive evidence of the enlightened vision and the wisdom of the drafters of the Constitution; and F WHEREAS, the bicentennial offers tha opportunity for the American people to rededicate themselves to the great principles that have formQd the basis for our national strength and prosperity; and ,•E WHEREAS, it is timely and appropriate for us to keep in our j hearts and minds the marvelous achievements of the Constitutional Convention in 1787 and to preserve the Constitutional Republic and the high ideals of our Founding Fathers by appointing a Bicentennial Committee to institute a commemorative program to i educate the residents of the City of Denton about the meaning and significance of the Constitution; r NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DENTON: j SECTION 1. We should all be proud to live in a free and democratic republic under a written constitution which is the oldest national constitution still in effect in the world today. This is a remarkable achievement for a free and diverse 1 people such as ourselves, and I trust that tho Denton E bicentennial committee will plan appropriate public and community-wide activities to celebrate the 200th anniversary of our great Constitution. i' The City Council has transmitted a resolution of endorsement of the committee to the national Commission on the Bicentennial, of the United States Constitution. We hope to receive special recognition for being among the first 2n0 Designated Bicentennial Communities in the nation. I As John Kincaid has already informed you, te Committee's meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 15, y 1986, from 7;UU-9;00 p.m, at the First Christian Church, 1203 N.
