HORIZONS COMMITTEE PROJECT
Denton County has black land on the east and the Grand Prairie in the
western part with the Cross Timbers occupying about 25% of the County's
area in which Denton is located.
One of the trees indigenous of the Cross Tombers area, which includes
the City of Denton, is the live oak.
It is proposed that during the Bicentennial year thatallof Denton
be encouraged to plant one or more live oak trees. A registration slip
or charter can be signed with the purchase.
All registrations will be placed in a safe deposit box, time capsule,
or retained in the NTSU archives.
At the end of 100 years, the county extension agent (or succeeding
agency) will be asked to measure the tree, based on trunk girth or
hieght or some combination of both to determine the largest.
Commensurately a deposit of $100.00 will be deposited in a local fi-
nancial institution to draw compounded interest for 100 years. The
winner of the contest (property owner) would receive the full amount
or it would be shared with the property owner and tri-centennial
Committee, or all go to the tri-centennial in the name of the pro-
perty owner. The amount will be $14,836.24 compounded daily @ 5%.
