A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DENTON, TEXAS TO
RATIFY A LETTER OF SUPPORT FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS GRANT
APPLICATIQN TO THE SLOAN FOUNDATION TO DEVELOP "AN INTEGRATED LOW-
COST, MULTI-SCALE AIR POLLUTION MONITORING, MAPPIIVG, AND MODELING
PLATFORM" PREVIOUSLY SENT ON BEHALF OF THE COUNCIL COMMITTEE ON
THE ENVIRONMENT; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the City of Denton's vision is to be a sustainable community that engages
our employees, businesses, institutions, organizations, and citizens; and
WHEREAS, air quality is a priority for the City of Denton and air quality data,
awareness, public education, and action benefits the community as a whole; and
WHEREAS, the City of Denton has supported local air quality awareness, engaged
citizens and provided education about actions to improve local air quality for more than 20 years;
and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Denton, Texas has provided leadership for
air quality action for the region through the North Texas Clean Air Steering Committee and the
Regional Transportation Committee over the last 3 decades; and
WHEREAS, the City of Denton has a history of mutual support and collaboration with
the University of North Texas on a variety of programs and projects; and
WHEREAS, the City of Denton was requested by UNT researchers to provide a no cost
letter of support for an air quality research grant application, said grant application being due no
later than April 1, 2019; and
WHEREAS, the proposed research aims to explore multiple calibration methods for low
cost sensors including in-lab and machine learning techniques, and the use of fne scale
particulate matter data as a part of larger mapping and modeling analyses; and
WHEREAS, the results of this integrated monitoring, modeling, and mapping analyses
includes information that may be of value to the City's current and future understanding of local
air pollution dynamics; and
WHEREAS, the City provided the attached letter of support on April 1, 2019, after
receiving direction from the City Council Committee on the Environment, now therefore,
THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DENTON HEREBY RESOLVES:
SECTION 1. That this resolution ratifies the attached letter of support and that the same
shall become effective immediately upon its passage.

On behalf of City of Denton, wc are �vriting in strong support of this proposal. We confrm our
commitment to work with the A1 and thc team to coordinate and organiie workshops to improve citizens'
education on sensor technology �nd use ol'open suurce data to build upon air quali�y inforn�ation in the
area.
The City of Denton is commitied to improving the environment through our Simply Sust�inable i'lan. Wc
enthusiastically support this collaboration with University of North Te�as to develop and implcment new
strategies to help meet today's needs without compromisin� the ability of future �encrations to meet thosc
same needs. By improving our understandin� of air pollution dynamics at the nei�hborhood level through
low cost sensor technology and citizen involvement, the proposed work will producc highly useful and
transferable results. The knowledge gained on monitor calibration, and fine scale results will effectivcly
enhance the re�ion°s air quality knowledge, and aid in mitigation eFforts.
