Moody Foundation
2302 Post Office St #704
Galveston, TX 77550
Dear Moody Foundation:
The City of Denton strongly supports Serve Denton's $100,000 grant proposal to the Moody Foundation. Over
the last eight years, Serve Denton has taken a dream and turned it into a reality with its 4.8 acre campus and
$3.5 million construction program now underway. The main campus is located in the area of the community
with the highest poverty rate and will help accomplish several things.
First, it will improve ease of access to services for clients by being located on a major thoroughfare in the
census track with the greatest need, and has a public bus stop 200 feet away. In the first full year of operations,
the agencies at Serve Denton Center project to serve 16,453 people. Second, it will provide economic savings
for nonprofits by providing high quality space at half the cost in the commercial market—a projected savings
of $453K in the first year. Third, it fosters collaboration between agencies and provides training opportunities
for nonprofits, such as the Nonprofit Leadership Program providing valuable leadership training to 201eaders
from across the area. Fourth, it will help reduce service duplication and inform clients to learn about services
they may not know about through a central intake process.
For these reasons, the City of Denton has supported Serve Denton in numerous ways through rezonings,
speciiic use permits, grants, and sponsorships. For ihis particular project, the City has allocated $100,000
in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding for the installation of a walk-in cooler and
freezer within the food distribution center. This 10,500 square foot food distribution center will be the
largest pantry-type operation in Denton County and one of the largest in the state.
This project is smart because it leverages several different funding sources to include the use of New Market
Tax Credits that brought in $3 million from US Bank to fund most of the construction. This $100,000 request
for capital campaign funds will help complete the new food distribution center, Health Services of North Texas
health center, and Children's Advocacy Center offices. These improvements reflect a high-level of
collaboration through shared risk and will significantly improve the delivery of services to those in need across
Denton County—one of the fastest growing counties in the nation.
The City of Denton thanks the Moody Foundation for its consideration of this proposal and encourages the
foundation, like the Meadows Foundation, to become a philanthropic partner in making a difference for Denton
County.
