A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DENTON, SUPPORTING THE
LISTING OF THE FAIRHAVEN RETIREMENT HOME, LOCATED AT 2400 NORTH BELL
IN DENTON, TEXAS, ON THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES; AND
PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the City of Denton has a history of identifying and preserving distinctive
neighborhoods, places, and historic resources in the City in order to celebrate their presence and
ensure their long-term protection; and
WHEREAS, the City of Denton's unique architecture, including that influenced by the late
architect O'Neil Ford, is a significant part of Denton's community identity; and
WHEREAS, the City of Denton has supported private enterprise that does public good;
and
WHEREAS, the City of Denton encourages high quality development that will respect and
enhance the character and pride of the City; and
WHEREAS, it took the tremendous vision, initiative, and tenacity of the late Myrtle
Richardson, and the women who worked with her, to fund, plan, and construct the Fairhaven
Retirement Home, located at 2400 North Bell Avenue; and
WHEREAS, in recent years the Fairhaven Retirement Home has been in a state of disrepair
and its future was in question; and
WHEREAS, listing on the National Register of Historic Places not only bestows the
highest distinction in the United States for a historic resource, but also is a step towards earning
the federal and state historic preservation tax credits; and
WHEREAS, the Fairhaven Retirement Home has been nominated for listing on the
National Register of Historic Places and the nomination will be forwarded to the State Board of
Review for consideration at their next meeting, May 18, 2019, in Marfa, Texas; and
WHEREAS, the City of Denton is a member of the Certifed Local Government Program
under the Texas Historical Commission and as such is required to provide an opinion on
nominations to the National Register of Historic Places; NOW, THEREFORE,
THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DENTON HEREBY RESOLVES:
SECTION 1. That the City of Denton, without reservation, endorses the listing of the
Fairhaven Retirement Home on the National Register of Historic Places and that this resolution
becomes effective immediately upon its passage.
