A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DENTON, TEXAS
APPOINTING MEMBERS TO THE DISCOVER DENTON ADVISORY BOARD; AND
DECLARING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the Discover Denton Advisory Board Policy and Guidelines outline the
board composition and states, in part, “ ...the Denton City Council annually appoints three (3)
sitting city council representatives, at least two of whom also serve on the Community
Partnership Committee.”
WHEREAS, because the Discover Denton Advisory Board Policy and Guidelines also
provide that the mayor is already considered a non-voting ex-officio member, the mayor cannot
be considered an appointee for the purpose of meeting the three-member appointment noted
above; and
WHEREAS, former members were Birdia Johnson, Connie Baker, and John Ryan who
served until May 2021 after the results of the General Election were duly canvassed, thereby
creating three (3) vacancies; and
WHEREAS, the Discover Denton Advisory Board Policy and Guidelines further
mandates that, “ ...voting members of the board are appointed for staggered three-year terms
with exception of the three (3) city council members appointed annually by the city council for
one-year terms .”
WHEREAS, the City Council understands the important work performed by the Discover
Denton Advisory Board and therefore wishes to appoint members to fill the existing vacancies;
and
WHEREAS, to eliminate a quorum of the Denton City Council from serving at one time
on the Discover Denton Advisory Board, at this time the City Council of the City of Denton,
after due consideration, has elected to fill two of the three board member seats; NOW,
THEREFORE,
THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DENTON HEREBY RESOLVES:
SECTION 1. The recitations in the preamble of this resolution are incorporated by
reference as findings of the City Council.
SECTION 2. The following members are hereby appointed to fill the unexpired terms
ending September 30, 2021 (such applicable term covering the period of October 1, 2020
through September 30, 2021) as follows:
Alison Maguire (who also serves on the Community Partnership Committee)
Vicki Byrd (who also serves on the Community Partnership Committee)
SECTION 3. This resolution shall become effective immediately upon its passage and
approval.
