HomeMy WebLinkAbout22-1054RESOLUTION NO. 22-1054 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF DENTON AUTHORIZING THE ORIGINAL DENTON DISTRICT TO PROVIDE A LETTER OF SUPPORT TO THE TEXAS COMMISSION ON THE ARTS FOR AN APPLICATION BY THE GREATER DENTON ARTS COUNCIL FOR THEARTS RESPOND – CULTURAL DISTRICT PROJECT GRANT IN THE AMOUNT OF$10,000 FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE “63 & 93: GENERATIONS INCONVERSATION” ART EXHIBITION, AN EXHIBITION HOSTING WORKS BY ARTISTS THIRTY-YEARS AND YOUNGER ALONGSIDE ARTISTS SIXTY-YEARS AND OLDER;AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Denton has established and designated the Original Denton District, as a cultural district of the City of Denton; and WHEREAS, the Original Denton District is a nationally recognized area with a decades- long tradition of art, music, entertainment, cultural heritage, and historic preservation; and WHEREAS, the Original Denton District is home to a large concentration of art, artists, musicians, performance venues, restaurants, bars, festivals, parades, community events, historic sites, parks, and complementary businesses that contribute to the local creative economy and enhance the culture and attractiveness of Denton for residents and visitors; and WHEREAS, the City’s history, location, and the influence of the University ofNorth Texas and Texas Woman’s University, together with an artistic, musical, and entrepreneurial culture have made the Original Denton District a cultural destination that attracts more than 1 million visitors annually; and WHEREAS, the City has a vision to further enhance the cultural amenities and assets located in the Original Denton District, preserve Denton’s heritage and history, promote the unique and thriving art and music scene, and manage compatible and sustainable growth to foster neighborhood pride and protect community character; and WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 444.03 1 of the Texas Government Code, the Texas Commission on the Arts has authority to designate cultural districts in cities across Texas to create special zones that harness the power of cultural resources to stimulate economic development and community revitalization; and WHEREAS, the Original Denton District was named a state-designated cultural arts district by the Texas Commission on the Arts on September 5, 2019; and WHEREAS, the Texas Commission on the Arts administers an annual grant program called the Arts Respond – Cultural District Project; and WHEREAS, the Greater Denton Arts Council has developed the necessary application materials and desires to make an application to the Texas Commission on the Arts for an Arts Respond – Cultural District Project grant; and WHEREAS, the Arts Respond – Cultural District Project grant application requires a letter of support from the cultural district management; WHEREAS, the Original Denton District has prepared a letter of support on behalf of the Greater Denton Arts Council to the Association to meet the application deadline; NOWTHEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DENTON HEREBY RESOLVES: SECTION 1. The City Council supports the Greater Denton Arts Council’s application for an Arts Respond – Cultural District Project grant and authorizes the Original Denton District to provide the letter of support. SECTION 2.
