A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF DENTON ADOPTING THE DENTON COUNTYHAZARD MITIGATION PLAN; AND DECLAR[NG AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, natural hazards in the City of Denton area, including high winds, tornado,
winter storm, hail, flood, drought, wildfire, dam failure, extreme heat, lightning, and expansive
soils, historically have actually caused or have the potential to cause significant disasters with the
loss of life and property and natural resources damage; and
WHEREAS, the goal of a Hazard Mitigation Plan is to minimize or eliminate the long-
term risk to human life and property from known hazards by identifying and implementing cost-
effective mitigation actions; and
WHEREAS, the Federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 and Federal Emergency
Management Agency (FEMA) require communities to adopt a hazard mitigation action plan to be
eligible for the full range of pre-disaster and post-disaster federal funding for mitigation purposes;and
WHEREAS, FEMA requires that communities update hazard mitigation action plans every
five years in order to be eligible for the full range of pre-disaster and post-disaster federal funding
for mitigation purposes; and
WHEREAS, the City of Denton has assessed the community’s potential risks and hazards
and is committed to planning for a sustainable community and reducing the long-term
consequences of natural and man-caused hazards; and
WHEREAS, the City of Denton and other North Texas communities are participants in the
Denton County Hazard Mitigation Plan; and
WHEREAS, the Denton County Hazard Mitigation Plan outlines a mitigation vision, goals
and objectives; assesses risk from a range of hazards; and identifies risk reduction strategies and
actions for hazards that threaten the community; and
WHEREAS, the City Council deems it in the public’s best interest to continue its
participation in and adoption of the Denton County Hazard Mitigation Plan. NOW, THEREFORE,
THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DENTON HEREBY RESOLVES:
SECTION 1. The Denton County Hazard Mitigation Plan, attached hereto as Exhibit “A,”
is hereby approved and adopted as an official policy of the City of Denton.
SECTION 2. The City of Denton shall take such action as may be reasonably necessary to
carry out the objectives of the Hazard Mitigation Plan, including pursuing available funding
opportunities for implementation of the proposals designated in the Plan, and will, upon receipt of
