A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF DENTON CONFIRMING THE APPOINTMENT OFBRYAN COSE AS ACTING CHIEF OF POLICE OF THE CITY OF DENTON POLICE
DEPARTMENT BEGINNING ON FEBRUARY 13, 2024; AND DECLARING AN EFFECTIVEDATE
WHEREAS, pursuant to Local Government Code § 143.013(a)( 1), the City Manager has the
authority to appoint the Department Head (Chief of Police) of the Denton Police Department, subject
to confirmation by the City Council; and
WHEREAS, on February 13, 2024, Chief of Police Doug Shoemaker submitted his
resignation to the City Manager effective 5:00 pm on March 2, 2024; and
WHEREAS, between February 13, 2024, and March 2, 2024, Chief Shoemaker will be on
personal leave; and
WHEREAS, the City Manager intends to conduct a nation-wide recruitment for a successor
Chief of Police; and
WHEREAS, an Acting Chief of Police is needed to ensure continuity of operations and
public safety until a successor Chief of Police is appointed by the City Manager and confirmed by
the City Council; and
WHEREAS, the City Manager has appointed Deputy Chief of Police Bryan Cose to the
position ofActing Chief of Police to carry out all duties and responsibilities of the Chief of Police,
effective February 13, 2024, and continuing until such time the City Manager, without further
Council action required, determines that status should end; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Denton has determined that the appointment ofDeputy Chief Cose to Acting Chief of Police should be confirmed; NOW, THEREFORE,
THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DENTON HEREBY RESOLVES:
SECTION 1. The recitals contained in the preamble of this resolution are hereby
incorporated into the body of this resolution as if set out fully herein.
SECTION 2. The City Council confirms the appointment of Deputy Chief Bryan Cose as
Acting Chief of Police beginning on February 13, 2024, and continuing for such time as the City
Manager deems appropriate, and the Acting Chief of Police is authorized to and shall carry out all
duties and responsibilities of the Chief of Police during that period.
SECTION 3. The Council hereby ratifies actions taken by Deputy Chief Cose in his official
capacity as Acting Chief of Police as of February 13, 2024.
SECTION 4. This resolution shall become effective immediately upon its passage and
approval.
