HomeMy WebLinkAbout25-658 INCOMPLETEORDINANCE NO. 25-658 AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF DENTON APPROVING A JOINT ELECTION AGREEMENT AND CONTRACT FOR ELECTION SERVICES WITH DENTON COUNTY FOR JOINT ELECTION SERVICES FOR THE MAY 3. 2025 DENTON GENERAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION BEING HELD FOR THE PURPOSE OF ELECTING COUNCIL MEMBERS TO DISTRICTS 1, 2, 3, AND 4. A SPECIAL ELECTION FOR THE PURPOSE OF SUBMITTING PROPOSED CHARTER AMENDMENTS TO THE REGISTERED VOTERS OF THE CITY OF DENTON REPLACING ALL INSTANCES OF GENDERED LANGUAGE WITH NON-GENDERED LANGUAGE; RESOLVING CONFLICTS WITH STATE LAW AND MODIFYING VAGUE OR UNCLEAR LANGUAGE. AND INCREASING THE TERM OF MUNICIPAL JUDGE FROM TWO YEARS TO FOUR YEARS. AT A TOTAL ESTIMATED COST OF $115,126.96; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, on February 4, 2025, the Denton City Council ordered a general municipal election to be held on Saturday, May 3, 2025, for the purpose of electing council members to District 1, 2, 3, and 4; and WHEREAS, on January 14, 2025, the Denton City Council ordered a special election to he held on Saturday May 3, 2025 for the purpose of submitting proposed charter amendments to the registered voters of the City of Denton replacing all instances ofgendered language with non- gendered language; resolving conflicts with state law and modifying vague or unclear language, and increasing the term of Municipal Judge from two years to four years; and WHEREAS, it is the desire of the Denton City Council to continue contractual services with Denton County for the administration of its general and special elections as done in the past;an WHEREAS, under the contemplated contract, Denton County and the Election Administrator shall be responsible for performing duties under the Election Code including but not limited to the following: • • • Coordinating, supervising, and handling all aspects of the Joint Election as provided in the joint election agreement and contract; Selecting and arranging for the use of and payment for all Early Voting and Election Day voting locations; Appointing the presiding judge and alternate judge for each polling location for Election Day; Arranging for the training and compensation of all election judges and clerks; Employing other personnel necessary for the proper administration of the election; Appointing other deputy early voting clerks to assist in the conduct of early voting; Arranging for all election supplies and voting equipment; Serving as Early Voting Clerk; Appointing an Early Voting Board to process early voting results; and Establishing and operating the central counting station to receive and tabulate the voted ballots. WHEREAS, the City Council deems it is in the public interest to enter into the joint election agreement and contract with Denton County contemplated above; NOW, THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DENTON HEREBY ORDAINS : SECTION 1. The findings and recitations contained in the preamble of this Ordinance are incorporated herein by reference. SECTION 2. The City Manager, or designee, is hereby authorized to execute the Joint Election Agreement and Contract for Election Services with Denton County in the form attached hereto as Exhibit 1 and made part of this ordinance for all purposes.
