SRN26-0003 AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF DENTON, TEXAS, RENAMING THE SECTION OF THE EXISTING BONNIE BRAE STREET, BETWEEN SOLAR WAY (NORTH OF ROSELAWN DRIVE) AND SOUTH BONNIE BRAE STREET (NORTH OF VINTAGE BOULEVARD), TO OLD BONNIE BRAE ROAD, IN THE CITY OF DENTON, DENTON COUNTY, TEXAS; PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY AND AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, The Bonnie Brae Phase 3 Street Reconstruction Project provides a new alignment of South Bonnie Brae Street between Parvin Street and Roselawn Drive connecting directly to the Bonnie Brae Phase 1 Bridge Project completed in 2021. Upon completion of Phase 3, South Bonnie Brae Street will be a 4-lane divided urban street section between I-35E and Vintage Blvd. ("the new South Bonnie Brae Street"); and WHEREAS, the original section of South Bonnie Brae Street between Solar Way and the new South Bonnie Brae Street just north of Vintage Boulevard remains a 2-lane rural roadway; and WHEREAS, in August, 2022, in anticipation of the final completion of Bonnie Brae Phase 3 and full access of the new South Bonnie Brae Street, Capital Projects, on behalf of the City of Denton, submitted a street name change request, renaming the existing 2-lane rural section of South Bonnie Brae Street, between Solar Way and South Bonnie Brae Street just north of Vintage Boulevard, to Old Bonnie Brae Road, as shown in Exhibit A, attached hereto and incorporated herein by reference (hereinafter, the "Subject Area"); and WHEREAS, the parcels affected by the street name change are shown in Exhibit B, attached hereto and incorporated herein by reference; and WHEREAS, the street renaming is requested in order to eliminate duplication of name spelling or phonetics, in accordance with the reasons listed in Section 25-15(b)(5) of the Denton Code of Ordinances; and WHEREAS, on September 22, 2026, the City Council conducted a public meeting and finds that the request meets and complies with all substantive and procedural standards set forth in Section 25-15 of the Denton Code of Ordinances; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Denton, in considering the request for a street name change from South Bonnie Brae Street to Old Bonnie Brae Road in the Subject Area, has determined the requested name change is in the best interest of the health, safety, and general welfare of the City of Denton, and accordingly, the City Council of the City of Denton is of the opinion and finds said name change is in the public interest and should be granted as set forth herein; NOW THEREFORE, THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DENTON HEREBY ORDAINS: SECTION 1. The findings and recitations contained in the preamble of this ordinance are incorporated herein by reference as true. SECTION 2. The street name of South Bonnie Brae Street in the Subject Area is hereby changed to Old Bonnie Brae Road. SECTION 3. The City's official Mobility Plan map is amended to show the change in the street name. SECTION 4. The provisions of this ordinance are severable, and the invalidity of any phrase or part of this ordinance shall not affect the validity or effectiveness of the remainder of this ordinance. If any section, subsection, paragraph, sentence, phrase or word in this ordinance, or application thereof to any person or circumstance is held invalid by any court of competent jurisdiction, such holding shall not affect the validity of the remaining portion of this ordinance, and City Council of the City of Denton, Texas hereby declares it would have enacted such remaining portions despite any such invalidity. SECTION 5. In compliance with Section 2.09(c) of the Denton Charter, this ordinance shall become effective fourteen (14) days from the date of its passage, and the City Secretary is hereby directed to cause the caption of this ordinance to be published twice in the Denton Record- Chronicle, a daily newspaper published in the City of Denton, Texas, within ten (10) days of the date of its passage.
