June 1, 2009 Minutes CITY OF DENTON CITY COUNCIL MINUTES June 1, 2009 After determining that a quorum was present, the City Council convened in a Special Called Work Session on Monday, June 1, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. at the Denton Airport, 5000 Airport Road, Denton, Texas. PRESENT: Mayor Burroughs; Mayor Pro Tem Kamp; Council Members Engelbrecht, Gregory, Heggins, Mulroy, and Watts. ABSENT: None 1.The Council received a report, held a discussion and gave staff direction regarding the Denton Municipal Airport operation, budget, capital projects and economic development activities. The briefing included comments by Dave Fulton, Director, Texas Department of Transportation, Aviation Division and airport tenants. Quentin Hix, Airport Manager, provided introductions of those present. He presented an airport overview which included (1) there were 280 based aircraft at the Airport; (2) 32 tenants; (3) 45 ground leases; (4) 27 business operations; (5) a 6,000 x 250 foot runway; (6) the Airport consisted of 750 acres and (7) had an economic impact of approximately 300 jobs, $9 million combined payroll and $300 million annual goods/services. The Airport had 144,000 operations per year. Operations consisted of individual take-offs and landings. Success stories included the completion of necessary infrastructure, the Jet Works Air Center, Business Air, US Aviation Group and Nebrig & Associates. Current projects noted included a business plan, $8.5 million runway extension, $1.6 million south east taxiway, $1.1 million perimeter security fencing, $1.25 million tower RADAR, $90,000 in drainage improvements and $420,000 access road improvements. Aviation Business presentations were done by Trey Bryson, Jet Works Air Center; Damon Ward, Business Air; and Mike Sykes, US Aviation Group. The representative for Nebrig & Associates was not present. David Fulton, Director of TxDOT Aviation, made a presentation regarding the Texas Airport Improvement Program. He reviewed the history of the organization and detailed some of the programs associated with the organization including airport system planning, master plans, business plans, construction management, pavement preservation, an automated weather observation program, general aviation terminal building programs, and fuel systems and hangers. Mayor Burroughs asked how to stabilize the Airport now that it was projected to be profitable. Hix replied that the Airport needed to work with other departments to have continuing growth at the Airport.
