COMMITTEE ON CITIZEN ENGAGEMENT MINUTES
November 3, 2014
After determining that a quorum was present, the Committee on Citizen Engagement of the
City of Denton, Texas convened in a meeting, November 3, 2014, 9:03 a.m., in the City
Council Works Session Room at City Hall, 215 E. McKinney Street, Denton, Texas.
PRESENT: Council Member Kevin Roden, Council Member Dalton Gregory, Council
Member John Ryan, Bryan Langley (ACM), Alison Ream (CMO), Kevin Gunn (Technology
Services), Kevin McGinnis (PCO), Sarah Lollar (Recording Secretary)
1. Council Member Roden called the meeting to order at 9:03 a.m.
2.The Committee considered approval of the minutes from the meeting of September 2,
2014.
Council Member Gregory moved to approve; Council Member Ryan seconded. The
minutes were approved.
3.The Committee received a report from Kevin Gunn, Director of Technology Services,
regarding open data initiatives. Gunn presented an overview of the phased
implementation of the open data initiative and reported on the user activity on the portal
to date.
Council Member Gregory asked if staff was aware of what other cities were doing in this
area. Gunn replied that several other cities use Socrata, ESRI, or other providers for open
data portals.
Council Member Gregory asked if the availability of certain data on the portal would
reduce staff time required to respond to open records request. Bryan Langley responded
that staff is researching options for software specific to open records to expedite that
process.
The Committee asked that staff issue a press release and pursue other public relations
efforts to raise awareness of the portal.
4.The Committee received a report from Alison Ream, Administrative Services Manager,
regarding the updated topic matrix.
5.The Committee held a discussion to set the next meeting date and topics for discussion.
Council Member Roden asked for additional information regarding public access to the
eTrakit system for permitting. Council Member Gregory asked to receive a report
regarding customer hold times for Police non-emergency phone calls. Council Member
Roden requested an item on a future agenda regarding voter engagement initiatives.
The next meeting was set for January 5, 2015 at 9 a.m.
6.With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 9:52 a.m.
