COMMITTEE ON CITIZEN ENGAGEMENT MINUTES
January 5, 2015
After determining that a quorum was present, the Committee on Citizen Engagement convened
in a meeting on January 5, 2015, at 9:00 a.m. in the City Council Work Session Room at City
Hall.
PRESENT: Council Member Roden, Council Member Gregory, Council Member Ryan, Bryan
Langley (ACM), Alison Ream (CMO), Chief Howell (Police), Bobbie Arashiro (Technology
Services), Tony Smith (Technology Services), Kevin Babcock (Technology Services), Ethan
Cox (Customer Service), Tiffany Thomson (Customer Service), Barbara Ross (Community
Development), Brian Daskam (DME), Kevin McGinnis (PCO), Robby Stengel (PCO), Tonya
Demerson (Reprographics)
1. Council Member Roden called the meeting to order at 9:02 a.m.
2. Receive a report and hold a discussion regarding Open Data initiatives.
Bryan Langley provided a brief update on current open data initiatives. Bobbie Arashiro, Tony
Smith, and Kevin Babcock (Technology Services) gave a demonstration of the enhancements to
the open data site.
The committee discussed the possibility of including additional information on development,
zoning and permitting processes on the site. Langley suggested that other information could be
added to the site if there is interest in a specific type of permit of process.
Council Member Roden asked that the downloadable datasets be more prominent on the page.
3. Receive a report and hold a discussion regarding service improvements recommended by the
Committee on Citizen Engagement.
Ethan Cox gave presentation on the customer service initiative, and Kevin McGinnis presented
recent and planned website upgrades.
4. Hold a discussion regarding the voter engagement initiatives.
Council Member Roden presented a handout on a Denton Democracy Project. Council Member
Roden suggested using VoteDenton.org information for upcoming election and possibly
embedding that into the City’s site.
5. Set next meeting date and topics for discussion.
The next meeting will be held February 2 at 9 a.m.
Council Member Ryan requested additional information regarding chat software for utilities
customer service.
6. With no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 10:58 a.m.
