Recycling Education Coord - GP3116 - SOLID WASTE- PUBLIC OUTREACH City of Denton Job Description Title: Recycling Education Coordinator Position ID: GP3116 Department/Division: Solid Waste & Recycling Reports to: Solid Waste & Recycling Public Outreach Manager FLSA Designation: Exempt Safety Sensitive: No DOT: No Definition: Responsible for developing and facilitating creative and interactive educational programs that promote the City of Denton’s waste minimaization goals and resource conservation programs. The coordinator will oversee the solid waste & recycling section of the Denton Sustainable Schools Program, a comprehensive sustainability educational program, and collaborate with other partner organizations. Essential Functions: Develops informal and formal educational programming directly related to solid waste and recycling, with the intent of promoting City of Denton Solid Waste and Recycling and related environmental programs Establishes and maintains relationships with education related entities such as DISD, other schools, universities and colleges, daycare providers, summer camp, scouting programs, and other organizations Give on-site tours of ECO W.E.R.C.S. Resource Recovery Park. Designs and conducts State TEKS compliant lessons and activities suitable for classrooms of all grade levels. Plans continuing education opportunities for teachers on the topics of solid waste and recycling Provides educational opportunities for the community through involvement in City sponsored events such as fairs and festivities Educates citizens through any available media and works with civic and non-profit groups to promote Solid Waste & Recycling programs. Responsible for maintaining inventory of educational tools and promotional items within budget Collect and analyze data concerning solid waste and recycling in order to measure success of educational programming; Presents data analysis to professional organizations through conferences and publishing Researches and evaluates other successful educational programs throughout the country Keeps informed on latest technology and information related to solid waste and recycling education Writes grant applications in order to seek funding for new and existing educational programming Additional Duties: Performs other duties as assigned Minimum Qualifications / Acceptable Equivalency: Bachelor's degree in biology, earth, or environmental science field, education/teaching, marketing, communications, or social sciences 4 years’ experience in at least one of the following: teaching in a classroom setting and planning TEKS-compliant lessons or creating educational presentations and marketing materials for all age groups or direct environmental work/research or experience in solid waste/recycling education, outreach, or operations OR Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job Core Competencies: Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, with strong presentation skills Ability to teach all ages, pre-school through retiree Ability to effectively speak, read, and write in English Ability to form and maintain effective relationships with students, coworkers and customers Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance Conditions of Employment: Must have a valid Class “C” Driver’s License prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license within 30 days of hire per state law) Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check Must be able to work outside of regular business hours as required Must be able to work in all types of weather Preferences: Bilingual in Spanish and English Certified teacher with experience in science education and/or strong skills in designing educational materials and teaching/presenting curriculum to classes/grades at various levels Previous grant writing experience Physical Requirements: Overall Strength Demands: The italicized word describes the overall strength demand of the functions performed by the incumbent during a typical workday.
