WHEREAS, an average of 130 suicide deaths occur per day in the US; one suicide death every two hours in
Texas; and
WHEREAS, 10% of adults experience suicidal thoughts; and i in 5 Texas high school students reported
thinking about suicide of whom 20%make a plan and 12%make an attempt;and
WHEREAS, addressing the need for coordinated mental health and suicide prevention services for children,
youth,and adults is fundamental to the future of the City of Denton;and
WHEREAS, each citizen of our community shares the weight of suicide concerns and has a responsibility to
promote mental wellness,recovery,and support prevention efforts;and
WHEREAS, the Denton County Behavioral Health Leadership Team, Denton County MHMR Center,
Denton County Zero Suicide Task Force, Denton County LOSS Team, and Denton Regional
Suicide Prevention Coalition strive to effectively address the mental health and suicide
prevention needs of families in our community.
NOW,THEREFORE, 1, Gerard Hudspeth, Mayor of the City of Denton, Texas, do hereby declare and proclaim
September 2023 as
"SUICIDE PREVENTION AWARENESS MONTH"
in the City of Denton and call upon all residents and organizations to unite this month in
increasing awareness and understanding of suicide, and the need for appropriate and accessible
services for all people experiencing suicidal thoughts.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the official
seal of the City of Denton,Texas to be affixed this the month of September 2023.
