Minutes 3_19_2011 l� l MINUTES LULAC Council#4366 Meeting March 19, 2011 Denton Senior Center Meeting called to order at 9:10 a. in. Present: Gabriel Carranza, Carmen Grant, Frank Perez, Rudy Rodriguez, Maria Parker, Kevin McGinnis, Maria Dudash, Sarah Cruz, Charlye Higgins, Roberto Calderon, Daniel Hinojosa, Isabella Pina-Hinojosa. Guest: Damon Bullock, Vicki Byrd, Jerry Vela, Emma Vela. I. Welcome, Pledge and Prayer II. Minutes a. Daniel made a motion to accept the minutes. Gabriel second. Motion passed. III. Treasurer Report a. All present looked at December, January, and February Treasurer Report. b. Daniel made a motion to amend Treasurer Report to reflect the actual profit for tamales sale to be $381.00. Frank second. Motion passed. c. Sarah made a motion to amend actual profit to reflect the cost of$20.00 for food handler permit to be $361.00. Kevin second. Motion passed. d. January Treasurer Report showed checks for District III Dues have not cleared and will not appear on Treasurer Report. President Pina-Hinojosa ask that a comment be put on all deposits for future knowledge. e. February Treasurer Report showed check number 1103 for the amount of$18.30 was issued to Isabella Pina-Hinojosa for overnight postage to national scholarship and membership fund. Joel Loya paid $35.00 membership on February 26, 2011. Scholarship recipients have picked up their checks. There is a question to the balance of the February Scholarship fund totaling $450. President Isabella Pina- Hinojosa will look into the matter. f. Gabriel made a motion to accept all three Treasurer Report with changes and amendments. Daniel second. Motion passed. IV.Guests a. Damon Bullock candidate for City Council District#1 spoke on his behalf. b. Rudy Rodriguez introduced Vicki Byrd, member of the Park and Recreation Board and Jerry and Emma Vela, family members of Dr. G. Roland Vela. c. Vicki made some suggestions to help council with the naming of a facility. d. Vela family wanted Dr. Vela remembered for his community efforts. e. Charlye Higgins suggested council make a presentation to city council to let them know what we want. Call Jennifer Walters to be put on the agenda. f. Vicki mentioned that the park board meets on the first Monday of the month at 6:00 p. in. at the Civic Center. Council should make a presentation to the board at that time. V. Standing Committee Reports • Membership Committee— o We have 41 paid members. • Scholarship Committee— o Isabella reported council sent $8367.66 to Nationals. o Daniel reported council received some unmatched funds: 3 donations - $300 from Rudy and Rosemary Rodriguez, $50 from Dr. Carmelina Holloway, and $100 from Michelle Cunningham. o Scholarship Selection Committee will meet at Jorge Urbina's office on Monday, March 21, 2011 from 5:30 to 7:30 p. m. Wrap up meeting will be on Tuesday, March 22, 2011 same time. 0 45 total applications were received: 25 national candidates, 11- SB 1528 candidates, and 5 undetermined candidates. o Maria Dudash was instrumental in getting the majority of the scholarship applications to LULAC. VI.Old Business • Education Forum-Rudy Rodriguez o Education Forum is postponed until the fall. Planning for the forum will begin in June or July. • Naming Dr. Rolando Vela-Rudy Rodriguez o Rudy provided council with a brief bio of Dr. G. Roland Vela o Rudy will complete the form to be submitted to parks board. o Rudy suggested the facility should be visible and bring pride to the Latino community. o Roberto made a motion to rename South Branch Library to Dr. G. Roland Vela. Gilbert second. Motion passed. o A presentation will be made to the parks board on April 41h and to city council on April 51h • Redistricting—Sarah Cruz shared that they have not met on redistricting. • Senior Center Tours o Tours were a success. o Lucha Medina, a community visitor this past visit volunteered to help with subsequent tours and programs. o Next tour in June followed with another in October. VII. New Business • Young Adult LULAC Council at TWU- Isabella Piiia-Hinojosa o Isabella presented to council the TWU LULAC council needs an adult council to be its sponsor and mentor to be part of national. o Kevin made a motion to sponsor the Young Adult LULAC Council at TWU with our President's signature (no monetary sponsor). Gabriel second. Motion passed. • Isabella let council know that the North Texas Civil Rights Symposium is on March 26 • Senior Center Contract-Isabella read the contract made with the senior center on what they will provide and what we as a council will provide. LULAC will provide information about the senior center at Cinco de Mayo. Kevin will look into cost of booth for information distribution if any. • LULAC has been ask for representation on Cinco de Mayo committee. • Greater Denton Arts Membership renewal was shared. Jorge Urbina shared that the council did become members for a fee. No action taken. • Council had a Federal IRS number. Council is a 501c4. • Isabella will file for tax-exempt status with the State of Texas. • NCTC requested summer scholarships of$500 per student. Members shared the council does not have the funds. No action taken. • Election results: o President Elect-Dr. Gabriel Carranza= 17 (will begin President term Jan 2012) o Secretary-Lizeth Acevedo = 16 o Treasurer-Sarah Cruz = 15; Sonia Sturdivant= 3 o Parliamentarian-Blas Daniel Hinojosa= 18 o President: Dr. President Isabella Pina-Hinojosa (begin her term as President - elected President Elect July 2010) • Isabella proposed voting for new officers in November with new officers to begin in January. o Jorge made a motion to reconfigure the calendar year so nominees will be slated in October, elections held in November, and installation will be in December, taking office in January. Roberto second. Motion passed. • Scholarship Banquet is on April 14, 2011 at the Denton Senior Center, 6:30 pm. Place holds 180 people. o Daniel Hinojosa shared El Guapo's bid: House Fajita Dinner or House Taco Dinner. o Bid by Rudy's family member: barbeque chicken, pinto bean, coleslaw or green beans or corn, and a roll. o El Matador, Mi Casita, El Chapparal, El Guapo, and Barbeque were the nominees for dinner. Mi Casita won. They will cater banquet dinner. o Guest speaker is Frank Davila, first president of LULAC in 1981. o Banquet will be the 30th Founder's Anniversary. o Officers will be installed at banquet. • Fiesta on the Square would like LULAC's participation or perhaps chair the committee.
