Kevin McGinnis motion to accept changes in both minutes. Dorothy Martinez second the

Council Scholarship Balance: $147.71
No activity in Scholarship account

UNT LULAC—Carlos Manuel
TWU LULAC—Celina L. Hinojosa
Casa del Inmigrante—Victor Espino
Dr. Rodriquez shares that he wants us to hear what this committee organization is doing in Ft
Worth. Expectation is for immigration reform bill will pass. Our immigrant community needs to
be prepared to become citizens.
Casa del Inmigrante -works with Dallas Immigration. Works with various groups in Ft Worth.
El Dia del Nino - Marine Park- Free Program to help is based on donations.
SB 1528 was elaborated by Casa del Inmigrante.
Guest speaker teaches ESL TCC and Ft Worth ISD. She oversees Proyecto Inmigrante-
accredited by Immigration Agency. All pieces to bring the services partnered with ISD to filter
down to schools. Catholic Charities vs Proyecto Inmigrante -waiting lists proyecto is new so
there is no waiting list.
Dr. Rodriquez - does the city charge for bldg usage? Hispanic Chamber of Commerce help pay?
What can we do to have such a bldg for Denton? The community college charges 150.00 for
citizen classes. Denton ISD citizenship classes are offered twice a week and is free on Saturdays
from 10 am to noon.
LULAC UNT Carlos Manuel -president of UNT LULAC
Wants to partner with local LULAC. Adult council makes the events UNT backs us up. Two
weeks - goal to have 15 members Dec and 100 by May oak cliff member knows immigrant
community. Mr. Carlos Manuel feels there is no large Hispanic community in Denton-he does
marketing and is willing to lend his services.
Ruben Trevino
Coodinator of Matachines 3 to 49 yr olds
invites you to come to 1:15 mass over 1500 Hispanics on a weekly basis. There are many latinos
in Denton outside the University area.
V. Standing Committee Reports
Fundraising Committee—Kevin McGinnis
• Fiesta on the Square and World Fest were rained out
• Selling water and drinks ($5 for 24 case of water)
• December 2—Holiday Lighting on the Square

Membership Committee—Dorothy Martinez
• New membership drive will begin in December at holiday lighting event
Scholarship Committee—Isabella Piiia-Hinojosa
• Isabella shared a sample for adding the names of donors to the front of the application
• Have two applications: one National LULAC; one local LULAC for SB 1528 sts
• Michelle Cunningham will meet with Isabella and Adrianna on Friday, October 22.
• Michelle has successfully chaired the scholarship committee for four years and her
guidance is needed.
VI. Old Business

• Clean up after today's retreat at Noon
• Cleaning supplies from Spring Clean
VII. New Business
Denton Holiday Lighting—December 2 @ 5:00 pm
• Michelle offered table cloths and salsa containers
• LULAC requested a better place for their booth
• Will sell tamales

Education Forum—January
• Dr Rodriquez, an opportunity for education to target our young students discussing how
to apply for Scholarships, Etc.
• Kick off to scholarships: Student segment of forum at NCTC?; Parent side/financial at
DATCU?
• recapture those who have dropped out?
- can now be up to 25 years of age
- get educated
• Dr Calderon- national convention resolution- Provide education up to the 12 th grade by
Mexican Govt.
• Michelle Cunningham shared John Cabrales in San Antonio -higher education center.
Depending on what high school you are at, you don't know what type of assistance there
is.
• Sra Offered services - clases on diabetes
• Name a facility to honor a bldg for Dr. Rolando Vela

• Public communications Dept- recognize things have been one sided city needs to know
how to effectively communicate with Hispanics
• Hispanic owned businesses are coming up we need to move forward to better
communicate and change plans,panel of people to communicate
• The church is an avenue to communicate
- how do we present this?
• Community development doing better

• LULAC - City hall Oct 26
Information will be sent to us
• Isabella suggested we get local church persons to speak in behalf of LULAC to promote
any issue. This way they are trusted and we get a positive response.
