Minutes_LULAC 1_21_2012 MINUTES LULAC Council #4366 Meeting January 21, 2012 (Saturday) Denton Senior Center Meeting called to order at 9:50 a.m. Present: Frank P6rez, Mrs. Guillermo L6pez, Isabella Pina-Hinojosa, Mariella Cudd, Roberto R. Calder6n,Anita Martinez-Strickland, Blas Daniel Hinojosa, Dorothy Martinez, Eric Quintanilla, Sonia Sturdivant, Alfredo Sanchez, Patrick Vasquez, Scott Stantliff, Lilyan Prado Carrillo. Guests: Councilman Kevin Roden,Vanessa Tonche (TWU LULAC Council#4205) and Derbha Jones. • Welcome, Pledge and Prayer by Dr. Roberto Calderon • Guest-Derbha Jones- Republican Candidate for State District Judge, 161h Judicial District Court. • Minutes -Blas Daniel Hinojosa made a motion to accept minutes, Mariella Cudd seconded. Motion passed. • Treasurer Report—Balance Operations Acct was $3,106.91 $300 was withdrawn for the Holiday Lighting for petty cash. $971 was the sales deposit into Operation. $700 was paid to Esther's Bakery for the 100 dozen tamales. Balance Scholarship Acct was $1207.00 $500 from the Holiday Lighting was deposited into Scholarships. $150 Calderon Scholarship $$250 Labinal scholarship ✓ Membership checks for: Reyes, Brock, Holloway, and Sanchez to be deposited. ✓ Motion for reimbursement to: ✓ Rudy Rodriguez $96 for Trophy House plaques purchased in December that were presented at December Holiday gathering. ✓ Isabella Pina-Hinojosa$91 for post office box annual dues and late fee. Dorothy Martinez made a motion to approve reimbursements. Sonia Sturdivant seconded. Motion passed. • Old business- A. G. Roland Vela Task Force.—In the absence of the task force chair Roberto R. Calder6n reported that there had been two meetings held in relation to the work of the committee. One: January 10t' (Tuesday) Jerry Vela, Yolanda Vela, and Roberto R. Calder6n attended the Denton City Council work session held at city hall that discussed the city's first-ever proposed policy for naming city parks and structures (streets excepted). Two: January 111h (Wednesday) Rudy Rodriguez, Task Force Chair, Jerry Vela and Roberto R. Calder6n met with Denton Mayor Mark Burroughs to discuss the state of affairs with regards to this LULAC Council#4366 initiative. Discussion included addressing previous meeting with the City of Denton Parks, Recreation & Beautification Board. City council is redoing park naming policy and is developing such policy for the first time in the city's history. There was discussion about the possibility of pursuing naming the yet unnamed 26-acre soccer complex in the North Lakes Park area. The city has already purchased the land and the project will be moving forward, according to Mayor Burroughs. • New Business- Raffle $1 per ticket, winners drawn at next meeting. ✓ Mention of possibly leading 2012 Fiesta on the Square ✓ 2012 Scholarship Banquet will be on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at the UNT Golden Eagle Suite located at the Union Bldg with a capacity of 144. $40 a plate, doors open at 6:00 p.m. ✓ Scholarships- Isabella Pina-Hinojosa reported that spring scholarship disbursements were received and are being given to students upon proof of 12 hours' worth of enrollment credits. Several students arrived during the course of our meeting to receive their checks and were duly recognized by council members. a. Scholarship donations due by mid February, due to Nationals by March I b. As of today's meeting,we're still waiting for the National Office to release 2012 application. Also,will be mailing scholarship sponsor/donation letters to previous donors. c. Isabella asked that for a LULAC member to shadow her this then take over scholarships for 2013. Ms. Prado shared her interest in helping out and in guiding LULAC members & families on how to fill out the FAFSA, TAFSA or other required documents for scholarships since these are her current duties at UNT. Patrick Vasquez shared an interest in assisting with this as well by partnering with UNT and other universities. d. Lilyan also shared UNT's informational day for scholarships to be held February 1 lth. All welcomed. ✓ Membership Dues - $40 are due by next meeting.
