Dr.Pina-Hinojosa-Speech.2011.Today we honor the roots Today we honor the roots, the founders of LULAC COUNCIL #4366.
To most of us we know this group has traditionally given
educational scholarships. Our goal was to provide an avenue to
open the door to education. At times recipients received $50 or
$100.. The amount wasn't significant but the recognition was
important.
When I graduated from high school, I received a $100 scholarship
from the Catholic Youth Organization. The simple fact that I was
named for a scholarship was an honor. This small token made me
feel important to strive in life because someone believed in me. As
an educator my motto has always been ...si to cais ..sacudete y
levantate. If you fall, wipe yourself clean and get up.
Prior to LULAC the latino community of Denton gathered and
formed a group known as Familias Unidas. Latinos from Denton
have continuously worked to uplift our community and work in
conjunction with the city and school district. At times we struggled,
we had differences of opinion but we have continued to uphold a
belief ..que si se puede. You see, we have to-because you and I
are forming the future. Estamos construyendo el futuro.. the path
to the future and we can only look back to reflect, learn and grow.
To those who take the risk of working as a community, I commend
you for we are enhancing the future of our children.
Today we honor Familias Unidas, a small Mexican American
community group of Denton that began the path to LULAC Council
#4366. We welcome you to read the minutes of the meetings from
1981 at the table of archives discussing the path for the future.
Would they stay as Familias Unidas...or form a LULAC council?
Today we also honor the fine group of high school students who
heard the cry of their parents or mentor ..echale gones hijo..try
your best and we honor the teachers who believed in these
students thus encouraging them to try. Tonight we honor you, but
it's not over...for its only the beginning. In a few weeks you'll
celebrate your high school graduation...but we also envision that as
a Latino, you will not only receive this diploma but use tonight's
recognition with a LULAC scholarship to complete your
undergraduate degree. YOU MUST HAVE HOPE...for without
HOPE, there is no vision. LULAC wants to hear from you when you
graduate with your undergraduate degree. We need you in LULAC
to help other high school students. You can't stop there, you've got
to go for your Masters...and later when the leaves begin to fall ...go
for the gold...your doctorate...why not? Corazones ...si se puede..if
you have HOPE...and faith in the almighty...a VISION. It doesn't
matter how hard you fall...what's important is that you get up
...never give up hope..sacudete...
Let us honor the men and women who have made scholarships
possible for the past 30 years ...when you graduate and have the
capacity to help others, please...do not forget to send DENTON
LULAC COUNCIL a check By mid January so that the scholarships
may be distributed in April.
Vamos a ver los lideres de Denton quienes fueron presidente desde
1981 cuando se fundo LULAC en Denton. Recuerden que solamente
con los fondos que recibimos...podemos ayudar. Gracias....
