LULAC Braswell brief data Dr. Ray Braswell, Superintendent
Denton Independent School District
1999 -present
According to Dr. Murdock, former director of the U.S. Census
Bureau: "The future of the state is directly tied to our growing
Latino population, and our young people...how well they do is
really how well Texas is going to do."
Dr. Ray Braswell recognized this challenge early in his tenure as
Superintendent of the Denton Independent School District. If
Denton ISD was going to play an active role in responding to the
challenges presented by the changing demographics of the state,
he needed the district to move more aggressively away from the
"one-size-fits-all" model of educating children. Dr. Braswell also
felt it was important to create the conditions necessary for his
administrators and teachers to try new and improved approaches
to teaching and learning.
The young LULAC scholars being honored this evening are the
products of his leadership and a curriculum plan designed to
meet the needs and interests of a diverse population of students.
Topping the list of successful initiatives is: improved programs of
bilingual (English-Spanish) education, exemplary dual-language
programs, Popo and Lupe Gonzalez School for Young Children
opened in 2010, Mariachi Estudiantil, Project GOAL, Mujeres
con Suenos, the International Baccalaureate (IB) program,
improved AP programs, English and Spanish classes for parents,
state-of-the-art career and technical education, programs to
increase graduation and college-going rates...
Dr. Braswell's hard work and dedication were recognized last
year when he was selected as one of the top five superintendents
in Texas — for the second time. Tonight, as LULAC Council
#4366 we honor Dr. Ray Braswell, Superintendent of Denton
Independent School District.
