LULAC NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND program is co-sponsored by Glenna G. Harris, MD
some 70 LULAC Councils who raise scholarship funds at the grass roots
level which are matched nationally by sponsoring corporations. The
League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), has considered Amigos de Oro
education its number one priority since it was established in 1929. As $667.00
part of LULAC's education efforts, the LULAC National Scholarship DATCU—Dale Kimble
Fund (LNSF) was established in 1975 to provide scholarships to Familia Hinojosa-Pina
Hispanic students attending colleges and universities. Under the LNSF
program, local LULAC Councils, in partnership with local and national
businesses, award scholarships to students in their communities. LNSF Amigos de �Ylata
is administered by the LULAC National Educational Service Centers, $500

history of Chicanos and Latinos at the University of
North Texas and the surrounding region.
Dr. Contreras was born in El Paso, Texas where she earned her

Paso and taught in the El Paso ISD prior to earning a doctorate from
Denton LVLAC Council#4366 the University of Georgia in Social Science Education. She taught
Gratefully acknowledges thirteen years at The University of Texas at Austin before coming to
the University of North Texas in 1987 where she also served as the
school's first Assistant Vice President for Multicultural Affairs through
Denton Area Teacher's Credit Union 1995.
Amigo de data In addition to her work in social science education Dr.
Contreras was active throughout her career in international
Denton Independent School District education. She was a curriculum consultant for the Bolivian Ministry
of Education and Culture for an entire year in the seventies and was a
North Central Texas College Fulbright Research Scholar to la Universidad del Tolima in Colombia,
South America. She consulted with other educational entities in
countries that included the Dominican Republic, Chile, and Mexico,
Texas Woman's University although her research interest in Mexican education spanned her
entire teaching career.
Dr. Contreras co-authored the most successful elementary
University of North Texas social studies textbook series through Macmillan/McGraw-Hill
Publishers in the 1980s and 90s and served as Executive Editor of The
Social Studies, a leading nationally refereed journal, for over 20 years.
She has more than 60 publications including books, textbook series,
chapters, articles, and other materials.
