Confine your response to the space provided below. Tell the committee about yourself. L.U.L.A.C . Scholarship Committee , This is my second application for a scholarship from our local chapter. I had heard from my sister that the first year of college, was going to be pretty rough because of the adjustment of the study habits to a different type of education environ- ment. I thought that I went through high school quite easily that I would be able to cope quite well, but I fared about average for a college student instead of doing very well as I had hoped . My grade point average is no where near as high as I hope to maintain, but Ifeel that given an opportunity I can raise it due to a change in study habits and becoming accustomed to study loads . I feel that there is a great need to get more Hispanics into our universities because I notice a great lack of them at North Texas . Though there is a need , the means is going to be extremely difficult because of the tuitions increase . Already I have heard some of my out-of-state friends say that they are going to have to withdraw from North Texas this Fall and attend a university in their home state . Even though the out-of-state students are going to be more affected by the increase , the in-state students are going to be paying more than double . Since hard times are coming into the education scene , Ifeel that I am going to need all the aid I can get so that I may continue my college education. I feel that our chapter _s doing a great job in getting our local Hispanic students to universities and making us look very promising in the future of our community. I thank you for giving me a chance and hope that you will continue to support my efforts at North Texas . Thank you very much, Michael C . Confine your response to the space provided below. Tell the committee about yourself. My name is Angela Margarita Torres. I am an individual . There is no one else quite like me in this world. In fact, there is no one else exactly like me in the infinite universe, . . . and there never will be again. I prize my individuality and realize that no one else has had, has , or will have the exact same thoughts and talents that I possess. It is because of this realization that I want to develop all my talents and ideas to their fullest extent. If I do not, all the talents that were given to me would have been wasted . A wasted talent or idea in anyone, no matter how small , is a tragic loss . I would like to develop my ability in the sciences . I am aiming toward a Ph.D. in genetics. My goal is to help discover a cure for at least one of the many genetic diseases that haunt the world. On a lesser scale, I would also like to major in journalism with an emphasis in technical writing. I would like to write scientific manuals or write for magazines such as National Geographic and Time. After developing these two talents , sciences and written expression, I should be able to help and inform many people. Not only is using your talents to help others important, using abilities to help yourself is important. I like to read and write fiction. With these talents, I am attempting to continue to improve my mind. A mind should never be allowed to stagnate, neither should the body. I also like to run, swim, and ride my bike. I would like to develop these talents and compete in competitions. Whether it is competing in sports events or discovering a cure for some dread disease, I will be using my talents to the fullest. This is important to me for what is the purpose of a gift if it is not used? A person is given a talent for a purpose and the misuse or abandonment of this talent is a tragic waste. Confine your response to the space provided below. Tell the committee about yourself. I am a freshman at North Texas State University with a grade point average of 3.46 . My major is biology; I plan to go to med- ical school and become a pediatrician. I started taking classes that applied to my major my first semester: I took botany and chemistry and received a 4. 0 in each. Chemistry was a real chal- lenge. I am currently enrolled in English, History, Chemistry, and Zoology. College has truly lived up to my expectations ; the atmosphere is so much more comfortable than high school. Everyone takes respon- sibility for their grades. This has given me more incentive to do the best I can because I feel more satisfied with the results. College is more of a challenge ; I spend much more time studying than when I was in high school. The LULAC scholarship I received last summer was a tremendous help ; it made it possible for me to concentrate better on my studies. I have a part-time job at the Information Sciences Library at North Texas State. I work fourteen hours a week shelving books and keeping the library neat. With school and work I have less free time, but I still enjoy reading and cooking. Since I started working on my major, I have done mope reading in the field of medicine. Right now, I am reading a book on clinical genetics . Once I start my practice as a pediatrician, I am going to pro- vide care for the needy children in my community. I would like to start a free clinic where these children can still r eC.t:i "c -complete attention and the best care possible. I push myself into reading ahead in my physics and mathematics courses. College has given me the freedom to learn things on my own, allowing me to get a better understanding of concepts than other students. This initiative will help me compete against other good students from other universities for graduate positions. College has also placed me in a job where I can gain valuable experi- ence in teaching. As a physics lab assistant, I learn teaching methods by helping students better understand the physics experiment they are doing. Talking with them and showing them the fundamental concepts of physics also helps me academically because it makes me rethink concepts I have already studied. The continued support of the LULAC organization will help me reach my goal of becoming a physics professor. My plans are to go to a first rate graduate school in physics. The only way I can achieve this goal is to push myself to the fullest. LULAC allows me to concentrate on my studies and not spend too much time working in a job to pay for my expenses. Last summer I was chosen to represent Denton High School at Boys State in Austin, Texas, where all of my expenses were paid for two weeks. While there, I learned how our state government works and was an active participant in an election process which was the best way to learn everything from attorney general to local and city management processes and the power that they may hold. I have always been very active in band and orchestra concerts, fund raisers, recitals, graduation ceremonies, and have maintained a 3.5 grade average while doing these extra-curricular activities. In addition, I also play a little piano, oboe and flute. But my primary instruments are saxaphone 4both tepor and alto) , and I have played the violin for several years in the orchestra. , This year I joined the Journalism Department at Denton High School and have enjoyed seeing how news is gathered, recorded and what an impact that the news media can make in our lives. While in the Dallas Independent School District, I was always a Hfgh donors Program Student, it was at Denton High that I assumed much more responsibility with my music studies and still maintain an honors study program. I am currently taking calculas and physics, while serving as section leader with my music classes. I have worked every summer since I was 13 years old except for last summer because I had so many honors projects (including Boy's State) and attended summer school . While an 8th grader in Dallas, I took honors English at the high school level (9th grade) and it was not accepted in Denton despite my "A" average, so I took an extra English course to satisfy requirements here in Denton. I have worked at a restaurant cooking hamburgers and french fries since it was for a friend of the family, at the age of 13 and 14. Later, I worked summers at a grocery store. This month I will play at a private wedding (saxaphone) for the first time along with my older brother Robert in Houston. I will have to be largely responsible for my own expenses and pocket money including loans and scholarships as my brother Robert did before me. He graduates from Rmce University on May loth. My intentions are to work for scholarships and loans as engineering studies are very demanding. Cathy attends the TWU daycare while I attend classes during the day. I can honestly say that Cathy. is the one who keeps me going when times get tough, and I could not make it without her. I decided to come back to school because I wanted to further my education; although more than that, I wanted to provide a better life for my child. I have attended TWU since Fall of 19833. beginning on a part-time basis. I realized that it would take twice as long to earn my degree if I continued in this fashion, so I made the decision to resign from my position at NTSU and attend TWU. This has been one of the best decisions I have ever made, and I have not regretted it. I have been attending TWU on a full-time basis since Summer II 1985, and have done quite well academically. I am employed by the Language and Literature Department at TWU, and work approximately fifteen (15) hours per week. I am a single parent, and having only this income can be rather concerning at times. I have applied for financial aid, and was able to receive a portion this semester. This, however, does not cover the monthly expenses that are incurred. I assure each of you that if I am selected as a recipient of your scholarship, the funds will be put to good use. I am currently a senior at Denton High School planning to attend North Texas State University this summer. My father attended college , but he did not graduate, so I plan to be, along with my brother, first generation college graduates . I am sure that your schol- arship would be a great incentive to me while I attend college. I believe that I deserve this scholarship because as a whole the Mexican-American community is grossly underrepresented in the college ranks and I believe that the high school students of today need to continue their education, as I plan to do, so that we can pave the way for other Mexican-Americans who wish to attend colleges . I have strived throughout high school to complete college preparaory classes so that I i-ill be prepared for my college career. I feel that if given the opportunity I can shove this committee that they have selected the right person to represent their council. I realize that the transition from my high school studies to college studies will be a difficult one , but I am more than willing to undertake the task. I wish to thank you for this opportunity to apply for your scholarship. I 'm working, as of February of 1988 , for Probe Market Research, which is a company that conducts surveys for big businesses . As a result of the many contributions made by ii;divi-- duals and business organizatons , we have awarded scholarships to Hispanic students to study in a college of their choice . In addition , we have recruited and sponsored local students for participation in the Washington-based Presidential Classroom for Young Americans and the Lorenzo de Zavala Youth Legislative Session held in Austin each summer . We invite you to join with other concerned citizens and local businesses by contributing to the 1988 LULAC Scholarship Fund and support our efforts in facilitating educational opportuni- ties for Hispanic youths . Confine your response to the space.provided below. Tell the committee about yourself. I think that a college degree is invaluable, and I plan on doing whatever is necessary to continue my education. I have a beautiful five year old daughter, Cathy, who attends the TWU Child Development Center. Going back to school has been very rough on both of us, because Cathy and I were used to having alot of time together; it is now evenly distributed between Cathy, school, activities, and other situations that may arise. It also has a great deal to do with my inability to accept grades that will just allow me to "get by." I explained to her that it is essential for me to get a degree which will enable me to succeed in my chosen career, and that it will not be long before I calm finished. We have sacrificed quite a bit in the last two years, but we know that it dill all be worthwhile in the long run. Presently, I have no savings, but I have applied for financial aid. Cathy's father sends us $100 a month for child support. The DHA covers our rent, and I have inquired about a part-time job on campus. Your consideration in reviewing my application is greatly appreciated. If I am selected as a LULAC Scholarship recipient, the awarded funds will be utilized in an appropriate manner. My name is Eduardo Adrian Mata, as my name implies I am of Mexican- American origin. I am currently a senior at Denton High School and have managed to achieve a GPA of a B, also I will be graduating under the ad- vanced high school diploma plan. I have achieved a few academic achieve- ments in my high school years, I appeared on the Honor Roll at Denton High 1986-1987, and was nominated into WHO ' S WHO AMONG AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL ST- UDENTS 1986-87. Besides my school activities I have a few outside school activities , I am active in two church youth groups, and I work 18-20 hrs . a week at a fast food restaurant. My hobbies are weightlifting, and occ- asionaly I go fishing or hunting with my two brothers . I feel I have a good chance of really doing something with my life, this is why I am cho- osing to go to a academically competitive school like Baylor. I feel that it will be a real challenge to me . My hope is to obtain a good education at Baylor' s business school and someday go on to start my own business . I feel that when I do start my own business it will be a contribution to myself as well as for the Hispanic community. I feel that I can serve as a role model because how many Hispanics go on to continue their education even fewer still are able to start their own business and make it a success . In this manner I will be able to benefit myself and the Hispanic community by serving as a role model to the Hispanics that wish to continue their education. I was so looking forward to having another successful semester at Texas Woman 's University , however , as you may be aware of , I had to decline the scholarship only after I encountered extreme financial problems that prevented me fom taking the required 12 hours of classes . I regret having to return such a wonderful opportunity, but my financial worries are so great that an additional full-time income was necessary and there- fore , giving me no choice but to work two jobs this year . I graduated from Denton High School in 1984 unsure of my abilities , interests , and future . Since I had not seriously planned for a career , I made mistakes my first two years of college. I enrolled at NTSU in a pro- gram of business and accounting . This decision proved to be an error that would later teach me a lesson. I was not happy studying accounting and I lost interest , made poor grades and quit school . I began to work more hours and tried to convince myself that I was not like all my friends who were away at college and had their futures all mapped out for them. I did just about everything to make it believable that I was not college material . However , as time passed and I grew more restless , I knew my only answer was to go back to school and finish searching for a future . That was two years ago and since then , I have found a profession that I am happy about -- Social Work. I realized that a career in a pros- perous field [,ias not a guaranteed ticket to happiness , but a career that reaps personal benefits ie ,the -future'-that I had been looking for . There are countless problems that society is faced with daily that need caring , concerned and committed individuals to alleviate those problems. I aim to be such an individual that works to insure better communities for our societies and better lives for individuals . Until two months ago , I had been keeping a full-time job as a night custodian for a year and restaraunt assistant manager for two years prior to that . With the hope of financial aids , I want to work part-time so that I may participate in the campus activities that I feel are an essential part of the college experience . I am a politically , as well as , socially aware person , therefore , I intend to run for student government , join more organ- izations and volunteer in various community programs . In 1986, I left NTSU with a below-average grade point , now I am proud to of achieved a 3. 5 and 4. 0 the last two semesters at TWU. The road back to college included soul searching , family support , and a strong desire to make a difference. A future goal of mine is to lobby for federal grants and assistance to build and operate community centers in Hispanic neigh- borhoods throughout the U. S . I know how important it is for our people , especially the youth, to have societal support an..dinterest in order to gain self-confidence , role models , positive reinforcements , and healthier recreational alternatives . I feel our societies should know how important this is and I intend to put forth efforts in this direction. Eventually , I would like to direct and operate such a facility . The last four years since high school have been full of trials and tribulations . Fortunately , I have a great family who has faith in my abili- ties and offered endless support in the decisions that I have had to make . As I see some of my high school friends graduating from college now, I look back at those years and see a time of searching and discovery . I have no regrets , only appreciation for those who believed in me and for opportunities such as this to continue my education successfully and happily . I consider myself an outgoing and goal oriented person. I enjoy setting goals and like the challange of fulfilling them. I have always put high standards into my life. I live with my parents but, I have worked part time since High School to help my parents with my education. I am planning to graduate from College on August, 1988 with a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration with a major in Finance. I hope to find a good job in a Financial Institution or in a Corporation. In my spare time I enjoy being in the outdoors. I enjoy playing soccer, swimming, and water skiing. I have a girl friend her name is Renae. I am a member of the Catholic Church, and I am also a member of the Knights of Columbus. I plan on joining the Finance Club at NTSU in the fall. I work part time for Mervyn's Department Store as a receiving clerk. With a LULAC scholarship for my senior year I hope to be able to work less and concentrate more on my studies, and improve my GPA. I have a 3.0 GPA in my business courses; however my overall GPA is lower due to some low grades in my basic courses. I received a LULAC scholarship for my freshman year for which I am very grateful. The reason I decided to apply for a scholarship now is because my father works for Moore Business Forms and he is going to be without a job soon. I don't know how much they will be able to help me this year. I want to thank you for considering me for a LULAC Scholarship, and to commend you for the good work you do for the Hispanic youth. I certanly appreciate it very much. If you need any more information please let me know. You are not eligible for an LNSF Scholarship if you are related to a member of the Scholarship Committee or the President of the participating LULAC Council to which you are applying for an LNSF Scholarship. This idea was later pushed to the back of my mind as I became interested in other fields such as history. In my twelfth grade year, I took a class called Advanced Social Studies Lab which made me feel that teaching -should be my career choice. In this class we went to ej ementary schools and assisted classroom teachers. This class was very enjoyable for me, I felt I ` cou 1 d communicate with the )chli 1 drep and help them through ;difficult learning and, enot i;ona;l situations. My supervising teacher enhanced my good ifeq!lings y giving me more and more responsibility in the classroom, which included actually conducting classes for her. With ,my teach6r's encouragement I found it very stimulating and exciting. II„ My supervising classroom teacher also shared some of he children's backgrounds and problems with me so I could understand their behaviors, fears, and ,joys. With this type of information, I was able to see what a difference a good teacher can make l in the life of a child. One of my responsibilities was to provide small group and individual help to a select group of students. Some of these children had problems and had a hard time working with the class because they were distracted. With help the students were able to work better in a larger group. Teaching is a very difficult profession, but the small rewards of seeing 'a child learn or grow emotionally would make it all worthwhile. While I was in this classroom I also began realizing the need for teachers with an understanding of psychology. In this day and age children have harder situations to go through then we did. In newspapers we often hear of people murdering children in schools, child abuse (sexual , emotional , and physical ) , terrorism, and the devastation of the environment. These issues are even hard for adults to handle. While helping the small group of children I noticed certain emotional problems that caused the children to be distracted. My supervising teacher was able to notice this before and was also helping these children with their emotional problems. Some of the problems the children were having was because of situations that have resulted from the problems of this era. This is why there needs to be teachers with psychological understanding ' to help students live in our present society. Both the Advanced Social Studies Lab supervising teacher and the fourth grade classroom supervising teacher told me that I had a real g i ft for teaching ch.i 1 dren. I have 1 earned so much and have increased my own self-respect by working in the classroom. When the students were told that they would be having a substitute teacher, they said, "Why can't Ms. Torres be here? She is our teacher, too. " I was a teacher in their eyes even though I came for only an hour a day. My personal feeling is that I have gained much more from the teacher and the children than I could possibly have given them. I feel that teaching 4 f/ is a career that I can do successfully, and it is a job that I would enjoy immensely. A scholarship would help me to reach my goalg4of becoming a teacher. Today a teacher must have a Masters degree to earn an adequate living. With a double major of Elementary Education and Child Psychology my schooling will take more time and money. With a scholarship I will be able to spend more time studying and taking courses instead of trying to work to get enough money to help pay for college. My sister will be in medical 6 cbool finishing up on her education when I go to college.. ThIs. 11eaves• _ a heavy burden on my parents financially. With paying taxes and j expenses plus our education it will be very difficult, •thatls why I want to help ease this finapcial burden by getting la' scholarship to help pay for my education. i I - . c n t- , t a " mt rr 1•r _r, It W 1.:S b^ h i t i A 'Yet, , C PERSONAL ESSAY.Confine your response to the space provided below.Tell the committee about yourself. i You are not eligible for an LNSF Scholarship if you are related to a member of the Scholarship Committee or the President of the participating LULAC Council to which you are applying for an LNSF Scholarship. Hotema My goal is to become a chemist. I have been working hard to reach my dreams of a successful career and I would like a chance to prove my interest and dedication and obtain a better education. I want to be a chemist to represent the Hispanic community in the professional field; to inspire other Hispanics to study, but mainly because is a challenge in my life. I want to study a career in which I can help to improve living conditions . I am from a Mexican family. I was born in Torreon, Coahuila. I grew up in the small town of Mapimi , Durango where I had to travel an hour and a half daily to go to preparatoria (which is 1 equivalent to high school ) . I became a resident in the United Staes in 1981 when my mother, Ofelia M. Garza , married Manuel C. 'Garza who was a United States citizen. He suffered a heart attack and passed away on September 26, 1987. I came to live i permanently in the United States in 1985. I was enrolled in 9th grade which was very hard for me because I was not proficient in English. It was also a challenge for me because the primary language that is spoken in my household is Spanish. My house is in the country, seven miles from the closest town; this has made it very difficult for me to get involved in extra-curricular activities in school . My mother cafinot speak English and does a not drive; therefore, it is hard for her to get a job. Our only financial support comes from Social Security which total $550.00 a month. I get )no financial support from my natural father. With this type of income, it would be very difficult for me to go to college unless I get, some type of, help. I am constantly challenging myself to do the very best. When I started attending school in this country most of my classes were resource because it was very hard for me to study in an unknown language; I had to study with' a Spanish-English dictionary. I later was enrolled in regular classes and advanced math and science courses . My average now is an A+. I have confidence that I can reach my goals for further education with the help of generous institutions like yours and I promise to do my very best. Thanks for your consideration. t PERSONAL ESSAY.Confine your response to the space provided below.Tell the committee about yourself.
