The Biology 2 course that I`m taking covers in detail areas which I find interesting, such as human genetics. The research done in this class was fascinating to me. Another course which I enjoy is Environmental Science. After taking this class,I realized that environmental issues are pressing issues that will affect my generation in the future. I became more aware of the difference one person can make in a community. I therefore hope to study ethics in Biology. I believe that there are many medical ethic questions that afflict our society, therefore I am convinced that my mission is to answer them. Another mission that I would love to take on is that of becoming a multilingual person. Being fluent in two languages, Spanish and English, has been a great personal advantage. I strongly believe that a society is built with many views just like a building is built with many blocks. Everyone puts in a block. I feel that in order for my block to be full of"Ivette"and to fit with all the other unique blocks, I have to try to understand the other blocks. I feel that interaction between people is a way of learning. Only then would I feel that I have contributed in making the building. For this reason I plan to take French in college, and I also plan to become fluent in it. All of this will contribute into making my block. Please type or print neatly a statement describing the personal&career goals your studies are leading to in the space below. Since I was a young child I always wanted to help others. I realized one of the best ways was to go into the medical field. I decided I wanted to become a nurse. I just recently decided that I wanted to go to Texas Woman's University and major in Nursing and minor in Biology and Spanish. I have taken a class in high school that gave me idea of what working in the medical field would be like and I learned that I honestly believe I will enjoy working as a nurse. I would like to become a Registered Nurse and work up from there. I am really interested in Pediatrics or the Emergency Room. 1 believe that if I stick with my plans I will not only be giving myself a good career but I would also be helping other people. I applied late at Texas Woman's University, because I was still uncertain where I wanted to go. I am waiting for a letter of acceptance. t I certify that all of the information included in this application is true and complete and that I am not related to a member of the Scholarship Committee or the President of the participating LULAC Council to which I am applying for an LNSF Scholarship. Signature of Applicant Date Leading to the Future I have definite goals for myself in the future. I intend to maintain an A-B average throughout college and establish good relations with my professors. I want to take courses that are not only for my major, but that are just for my knowledge. I plan on majoring in a science, probably Biology. It is in this field where I think I can serve people the best, whether it is in education or in a lab. After graduating from college I want to pursue the medical field and specialize in infectious diseases. I would like to eventually work at either CDC(Center for Disease Control)or in a hospital. I have also thought of becoming a Physical Therapist,or work at a rehabilitation center for cluldren as a therapist or psychologist. In order for me to achieve my goals I know that I must work to the best of my ability, and that is exactly what I will do. My various i experiences have taught me never to give up or to change my hopes and dreams just because they may be hard to accomplish. I will use all of the aspects of my education to broaden my views and to contribute productively to my community. I am very excited about attending college. I know that the years to come will be my building blocks and the basis for my life. Southwestern University, in Georgeto%m, TX. is the university that I really would like to attend. It is a small liberal arts school of only 1,200 that is known for its outstanding, caring staff. and for its sciences. I have already visited Southwestern and I had a wonderful feeling about it. It has a very warm atmosphere, and a prestigious curriculum. I feel that Southwestern is the best place for me. I know that at Southwestern University I will be able to develop into the citizen that I wish to become. I think that Southwestern will give me a great basis on which to start my life on my own. I have been I accepted to the college, but I am still trying to find a means of how to get there. I am a hard ' T worker. I intend to excel in everything that I do, 'whether it is in the classroom Orin my extracurricular activities. My greatest strengths are my abilities to work with others and my natural urge to take leadership. I feel comfortable in difficult situations because I know that I can handle them if no one else can. An adjective that would best describe me would be vivacious, because along with being serious and a hard worker I also have a very lively personality. I feel that.this is a quality that ,xill always help me through hard times and will lead me to victory throughout life. I have taken a total of 14 Honors/ Advanced classes in high school:(All four English Honorsw'AP.., Physical Science H,Biologyl-H, Chemistry H,Biology 2-AP, Physics B-AP, World History H,Algebra 1-H, Geometry H,Algebra II-H, and Precalculus). These classes have been preparing me for the advanced level of college work. I hope that I may prove to be a productive l citizen and role model for my heritage and culture. Through my studies and hard work I will prove that anything is possible and that there are no boundaries in this country if we all come together and help one another succeed. i i r r `I, ILc'Y `yc If I had to decide on what my future goal or career choice would be, as of this point in my life it would be in business . I really like being around people and dealing with numbers . The exact field of business I have not yet chosen, although I would like to start an internship with a large corporation that deals in retail and someday either build my own company or help run a company. I also plan to use Spanish to help me with international relations . I am fluent in the Spanish language and travel to Mexico often. I am currently in Business Professionals of America and a group of students and I formed a small self-owned business for competition. In school I am also involved in athletics . I have started the past two years on the varsity football team. I am the defensive captain, and play free-safety. The most important role I play is team leader, as captain I am in charge of talking j to the officials and giving a good example to team mates by working hard. I led the team in tackles and was awarded all- district and defensive M.V.P. , which is important because without accomplishing goals it is hard to become a leader that others will listen and respond to. Along with those activities my classes have also helped me develop intellectually. I have taken seven honors and two A.P. classes to help me strive in college. My future goals will definitely include becoming successful and earning a degree, which will help me accomplish my goals. In the immediate future I see myself in college working toward that particular degree. I estimate that in the next five to eight years I will have a well paying job and be able to support myself. r' i 1 LULAC NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND STUDENT APPLICATION 012/96 Please type or print neatly and submit to the participating local LULAC Council in your area Name Stephanie Ann Terry ( Gonzalez ) First Middle Last Address 2308 Eagles Nest Street Denton Texas 76201 City State Zip Telephone 817- 3 8 7-5 0 8 5 Area Code Number Date of Birth I DW JQP / 416o Social Security#_ Sex: ❑ Male • Female Ethnic Origin: 3 Mexican •❑ Puerto Rican• ❑ Cuban•❑ South/Central American • ❑ Other Parent/Guardian Name George & Sara Terry Phone(if different) Address(if different) ACADEMIC DATA High School Ryan High School Date of Graduation May 24 , 1997 GPA/Scale 3 . 5/4 . 0 College Baylor University Major Pre-M e d GPA/Scale Current Standing (as of the date of this application): ❑ Not Enrolled •❑ High School Senior•❑ College Freshman ❑ College Sophomore •❑ College Junior•❑ College Senior •❑ Graduate Student ACT/SAT Score: 21 Class Rank and Size 9 9/3 2 6 List honors, awards, extracurricular activities, and community involvement; "A & A-B" Honor R o 1 1 , Who's Who Among American High School Students-2 years; National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine; National Council on Youth Leadership; United States National Mathametics Award; All- American Scholar in Science; Page for the Texas Republican State Convention; Member of the National Cheerleading All-Star SquadFINANCIAL DATA Annual family income $ 50,000 #Dependents 2 #Dependents in college 2 College expenses for year of application: Tuition$ 8,640.Q0 Room/Board$ 4,488 Other$ 800.00 Money available for college expenses: Parents$ 500.00 Work$ 200.00 Savings$ Other$ Have you applied for student financial aid? ❑Yes ❑No Please list amount of financial aid already secured$ FOR LULAC COUNCIL USE ONLY Council#: Award Amount: Award Type: Check if the applicant has submitted the following: ❑ Signed and completed application form* ❑ Enrollment or admittance verification ❑ Personal essay•❑ High school or college transcript •❑ACT or SAT score report PERSONAL ESSAY. Sarah spent her childhood years in the border city of Del Rio,five minutes from Mexico,in a sweet mixture of bicultural family, friends and teachers. She never had to be taught to study and do homework ... it was what people did in her world. Sarah attributed her drive and intelligence to her mother and saw her father as her hero.As a young girl she was sweet, polite and soft- spoken, but could be a surprising bundle of fire. She never questioned who she was and had the courage to defend herself if necessary. For example, accused of being a"pinche gringa" at the beginning of the 7th grade, Sarah picked up the shameless accuser, and unwitting young boy,by his shirt and threw him out of her seat."La Princessa"earned her respect. Sarah was a perfectionist.Nothing she created was ever as good as she wanted it to be and she applied these standards to her ambition.By the time she was twelve, she knew whe wanted to be an architect, and that dream never waivered. It was what she WOULD be.She was accepted to the architecture schools of Texas A&M University, the University of Miami, the University of Texas and Tulane University, receiving scholarship awards from all. Sarah was realistic and driven to succeed. Her awards, performance and activities leave no room for doubt. Her qualities embody all that we wish for every young girl or boy.A belief in themselves and success in life.Sarah's expectations of herself and her peers demanded pursuit of excellence and appreciation of all opportunities which come before you.If you don't see them, then you look for them with confidence and without apologies. Just prior to her death,Sarah was selected for a LULAC scholarship award because of these qualities.Tonight LULAC honors her by offering the LULAC National Scholastic Award in her name. Beauty is in that which is experienced as whole and complete. Sarah will forever be beautiful. 4 CHRISTINA E.BEJARANO LOUIS M.MEDINA Ramon&Benita Bejarano Dr.Jeffrey&Cindy Fitzgerald Psychology Computer Science Ryan High School Denton High School TWU or UNT Texas A&M University ALICIA G.DE LOS SANTOS JACQUELINE SAN MIGUEL Sergio&Lisa De Los Santos Francisco&Amabilia San Miguel Medical Field Biology Ryan High School Denton High School Texas Lutheran University University of Texas-Dallas UNT or TWU SENDI B.ESCAMILLA Ignacio&Genoveva Escamilla SONIA M.SANCHEZ Teacher Ricardo&Lucia Sanchez Ryan High School Fine Arts TWU Ryan High School UNT BENJAMIN J.GARCIA Fred&Mary L.Garcia MARTIN H.TOVAR Geology Lupe&Dominga Tovar Ryan High School Law Enforcement Lady Lake University Denton High School NCTC KARINA HERNANDEZ Victor&Yolanda Hernandez JENNIFER L.TREJO Pediatrician Reynoldo &Alicia Trejo Ryan High School Business UNT Ryan High School TWU EDWARD P.LOPEZ Willie&Iris Lopez R(OBERT E.VALDEZ Journalism Ramiro&Emily Valdez Ryan High School English UNT Ryan High School UNT/University of Texas JAMES M.MCCLENDON Samuel&Loyda McClendon Elect Engineering Denton High School University of Miami 5 a ,w.q3 DR.VINCENT RAMOS Dr.Vincent Ramos is Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of North Texas and is cur- rently serving a second term a president of Denton LULAC Council #4366. Please let me know when we need to get the check to you in time for the awards dinner. I very much enjoyed attending the dinner last year and look forward to doing so again in 2003. So many people have tried to steer me to an occupation in computers or business. When I ask the reason for these suggestions I always get the same answer, you'd be rich. Unfortunately I'm not interested in either field, or the dream of being wealthy. I have.an aspiration of being happy when I grow up,despite income. I believe that an occupation in psychology will lead me to where I want to be. Psychology will lead me to life in which I'd feel fulfilled. I want to be the person that helps people understand why they feel the way they do. I'd be the person people come to when they feel lost and in need of assistance. I want to lend a hand to those who need it. I can be the one who leads people to a better life. I see so many people around me who would be so much better off if they just had someone who'd listen. I want to be there for anyone who could possibly need me. My desire is to one day have my own practice. I want to be my own boss and be able to help everyone I can. I want to use my own theories and ideas of psychoanalysis to improve the lives of others. From aspects of Freud to the ideas of Jung, I want to utilize the best concepts of the field to benefit my patients. These dreams wouldn't be unattainable without a solid education. I hope to do my undergraduate studies at Fordham University to receive my bachelors. After that,I would like to go on to Michigan University at Ann Arbor to do my graduate studies and receive my doctorate. With these for my background, I would be able to accomplish all I've ever wanted. "Students, now that we've seen what your parents do,I want to know what you want to do. Get out a sheet of paper, and write to me about"What You Want To Be When You Grow Up." I can recall my third grade teacher assigning this prompt and my response being"the first women president!" Years have past, and though being president isn't a terrible goal to accomplish, I'd rather make a difference one person at a time than a whole nation. Lots of people lack self- esteem, and I believe the root of self-esteem comes from within. I want to help children, adolescence, and even adults feel better about themselves, spiritually, mentally, and physically. I want to bring out the "Hollywood Smile"in everyone, and what better way than becoming an orthodontist! Becoming an orthodontist is a recent goal I've set for myself. I have had troubles with my own teeth which in times have made me not want to even open my mouth. I got braces a year ago, and every time I go in for an appointment,I am amazed how much of a difference my orthodontist makes in each of his patients. If you take a minute to observe, an orthodontist does more than make smiles happen. By means of these smiles comes a sense of security and dignity. The security to expand to new horizons, and the dignity needed to reach them. This is my passion, making a difference in someone's life and pushing them forward through the world. Bringing a smile to someone's face is a great accomplishment for me, and is something I do now as an adolescent through my work as a student, employee, and sister. Life is full of happiness. The more happiness in life, the more it can be enjoyed. Becoming an orthodontist is a career that will bring me happiness and a smile to my face as well as others. I have been so greatly influenced by my marketing teacher that I have decided to become a teacher to help other students learn how the business world functions. I think it is important for students to know how the world functions so they will be better prepared for what lays ahead of them. My main personal and career goal is to have an open mind about the things that I will teach, and to never stop educating myself as well as others. I know I have so much to learn from the world and hopefully will never stop learning. By becoming a teacher, I will open many windows of opportunities to continue my education and therefore further help my students. Education has always and will continue to be an important factor in all of my goals. I feel if you play a part in educating someone else, then you alone are contributing something to the world around you. I have had many great influences in my life that have pushed me to strive for more every day. I have eleven-year-old identical twin brothers, and two younger sisters. I believe strongly in the idea that knowledge is power and try my hardest to instill this belief in my younger siblings. The biggest responsibility as a big sister I have is to be a good role-model that my younger siblings can look up to. Ever since I was in third grade,I always dreamt of becoming a lawyer. It seems like I have this innate ability for talking(for extended periods of time at that), as well as getting my point across in the utmost coherent and persuasive manner. I have always been intrigued by the appealing lifestyle of a profession in law; it is never dull, what with all the meetings, conferences, court sessions, law libraries, summation writings, and most importantly, the satisfaction of knowing you play a vital role in countless people's lives throughout your profession. As the defense attorney for Denton's Teen court program,my short-term goal is to win the majority of my cases. Defending adolescents ages 9-17 that are charged with misdemeanors directly relates to my long-term goal of becoming a lawyer.Being successful and gaining experience on the teen court level positively foreshadows my potential to excel on the federal court level as well. I want to attend the University of Chicago, which goes above and beyond in everything I could possibly want in a university. I will concentrate in the specified major: Law, Letters, and Society, which will benefit me the most in preparation for my career as a lawyer as it will polish my analytical skills and develop much more depth in my writing. The University of Chicago goes above and beyond in everything I could possibly want in a university. For the academic programs it offers—the size, type, and Community, the University of Chicago is a perfect match. Since I can remember I have been brought up to believe that I have all of the potential, ability, and power inside of me. I can do anything I set my mind to.It is this mentality that allows me to go above and beyond in everything I do;this mentality provided me with much needed solid ground to get me through my junior year. I was told my father had been diagnosed with cancer the day I returned home from summer debate camp(later after treatment, my father was told that he was completely cured and the Dr. said it was as if the cancer had never occurred). Contrary to what might be expected of a human's reaction to such a detrimental situation,I did not withdraw into isolation nor sink into sadness rendering me unable to be consoled, instead,I realized that, regardless of the finical circumstances surrounding this situation, I would overcome this obstacle. Presently,my family is still trying to"catch-up"from my dad's illness and attending the University of Chicago is rather expensive for an out-of-state tuition. Being selected for a LULAC National Scholarship Fund award will provide a means to attend higher education while at the same time alleviating some monetary strains. It undoubtedly will aid me to achieve my desired end of a successful future and a life filled with positive choices. Ever since I entered high school I have been wondering what I am going to do after school. So during my four years a Ryan High School I gave been in sports, in foreign languages, and in musical activities. All of theses activities are enjoyable, but my dream career has always been Law. I want to be able to help other people fight for their rights who are not able to do it themselves. My career goal is to go to college and get my bachelors degree in Pre-Law, and go on to attend law school. This also would help me personally because I would like to help other people during times of personal conflicts. Being a lawyer would help me to grow into a strong woman. .And being a Hispanic woman would help me even more. I see my self in seven years being an important Hispanic layer. Just to think that I would be helping my fellow race and others makes me feel important. I make me feel like I could do that and go on further to be even stronger. I know I can accomplish this and every thing I put my mind on. I know I have not done everything possible in school to learn more about law, but I think what really counts in what you do in college. Signature of Xppii Date My name is Frances Madrenne Bernadette Gonzalez. My father is the oldest of five children, all of whom graduated high school. However, he was the only one to continue his education, and not only go to college, but get his Master's degree as well. I am the second oldest of five children, but will be the first to graduate high school. Out of all the grandchildren on my father's side,I am the fifth oldest. I will be the second to graduate high school and the first to go to college. I want to follow in my father's footsteps by going to college, and by doing so, set the example for my younger siblings and cousins. I have already been accepted into the University of North Texas where I am considering a major in psychology and possible career in school counseling because of my past experiences and classes I have taken. I am also interested in a field somehow connected to or utilizing my faith. I'd like to work at least part-time as a youth minister in the Catholic Church. My cousins on my mom's (step-mom's) side of the family have all been extremely successful in their educational pursuits. It is frustrating to see such disparity between the two sides of my family, and makes me want even more to succeed and set the tone for my younger siblings and the cousins on my father's side. So often I hear the excuse of lack of money when it comes to not furthering one's education, and I want to prove that where there's a will, there's a way. The LULAC Scholarship would help me achieve my goal—to make my own way through college with as little financial assistance from family as possible. Sincerely, Frances M. B. This is an aspiration that I have considered for the vast majority of my life. The rigorous class schedule of AP classes and the extra-curricular activities I have participated in throughout high school have been a tremendous help in preparing me for this endeavor. The academic classes that I found that I enjoyed most were Biology,Chemistry, and English. I found Biology to be absolutely astonishing because of the subject matter:life. I loved learning about the multitude of living creatures on the Earth, and even more so, learning to a degree how they function, and how they work. Chemistry provided a similar experience: I was able to study life, and the different nonliving elements that comprised it,on a molecular level. The inner workings of the components of life are absolutely astounding,so it is natural for me to have a desire to learn as much as I can and to work as diligently as possible so to ensure that I am able to excel. My passion for Biology and Chemistry helped to reinforce my desire to become a doctor, and convinced me that I have an aptitude for it. English, especially AP English 4 that I am currently taking during senior year, has exposed me to the beautiful world of literature and to a vast array of human experience and possibility. I also enjoy English exceedingly because literature and language give such amazing insight into the human soul. I have found that literature adds such color to life_ This knowledge will aid in relating to future patients. Other classes that I have taken that I may not have been quite as fond of have developed my work ethic through challenging me. For instance,I have found that Calculus is a challenging subject for me simply because I don't pick up on it right away. However,I have come to accept the fact that while I may not pickup on it quite as fast as some,I understand it eventually after I have completed the homework assignments. Calculus has been a challenge, but I have come to accept the fact that I have to be patient with myself and not expect to understand everything initially. Some courses were truly a constant challenge that made it necessary to study them extensively and helped me to develop a useful amount of study habits. The math courses, especially Geometry,Pre-Calculus, and Calculus BC,were very useful in developing logical reasoning and thinking skills. The math classes I have taken will most assuredly prove themselves to be a necessity in college and medical school. The same is true of AP Physics. I definitely have more of an interest as well as more of an aptitude for Biology and Chemistry than I do for Physics, but I appreciate the fact that I need to work harder to earn good grades in that class. These two classes have taught me how to persevere. Because of this,my grades in both classes have improved. The problem areas that remain are simply trying to keep a positive perspective of the classes themselves and realizing that even though some things may not come as easily to me does not mean that I am not fully capable of understanding them. I have learned more than simply subject matter from my high school courses: I have learned priceless lessons in the subject of life. Hard work and perseverance do indeed pay off. I have many goals that have been strengthened by my high school academic experience. I plan to attend and graduate college with a 4.0 GPA and a vast variety of experiences that I will have had in extra-curricular activities. 'then, I plan to attend medical school and graduate at the top of my class. From there I will work in a hospital for a few years to get some experience under my belt, and then I will open my own Family Physician practice. I will be blissfully happily married and have two wonderful children. I will have a strong faith in God. These goals are all related because I feel they will ensure success and happiness, and will make life meaningful and worthwhile. God,my family, and my career will be my priorities. My education has truly helped to enhance and solidify my goals because they have provided the knowledge and experience in a plethora of areas that I will need to accomplish them. Because of my education,my dreams will become reality. My career goal is to become a culinary professional. I want to be a manager at my workplace. I really like where I work at Red Lobster and I have been there for almost three years. Everyone at my home works-"I e.en working to help my parents with bills. I want to go North Central Texas College to get started with basics and I plan to transfer to a four -year college to study Business or Restaurant Management. I am interested in becoming a culinary professional, because I like working with foodi everything that has to do with a restaurant I want to make lots of money,so I can later repay my parents for what they have done for me. I think that having a family is what is important in our life and I want to be able to provide for them financially by having skills to get a good job.
