June 19, 2025 Juneteenth Day Proclamation by the Oapor of the Up of Menton, Memo Eo all to WIjom tbe5e pre5ent5 5ball come, Oreetittg5: WHEREAS, June 19, 1865,marks a pivotal moment in American history,known as Juneteenth Independence Day, when General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced to the people of Texas that,in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation; and WHEREAS, Juneteenth serves as a profound reminder of the long journey for freedom,equality, and justice, celebrating the resilience, strength, and invaluable contributions of African Americans who have enriched society;and WHEREAS, it is essential that we continue to educate ourselves and future generations about the history and significance of Juneteenth, fostering a deeper understanding of the ongoing fight for civil rights,and committing ourselves to building a better future for all. NOW,THEREFORE, I, Gerard Hudsepth, Mayor of the City of Denton, Texas, do hereby declare and proclaim the 19th day of June 2025 as "JUNETEENTH DAY" in the City of Denton and encourage all citizens to join in the spirit of celebration and friendship for the good of the citizens of our community.
