WHEREAS, in 1985, Rotary launched PolioPlus and in 1988 helped create the Global Polio
Eradication Initiative—a partnership that includes the World Health Organization,
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda
Gates Foundation, and GAVI—to immunize the children of the world against
polio;and
WHEREAS, since 1988 polio cases have dropped by 99.9 percent;and Rotary has contributed
more than $2.2 billion and countless volunteer hours to help protect nearly 3
billion children in 122 countries;and Rotary continues to raise$50 million each
year, which is matched with$100 million given annually by the Bill&Melinda
Gates Foundation;and
WHEREAS, the Rotary Club of Denton is part of a global network of more than 1.2 million
clubs worldwide, all working on service projects to address critical issues like
poverty, disease, hunger, illiteracy, and the environment—both locally and
globally.
NOW,THEREFORE, I,Gerard Hudspeth, Mayor of the City of Denton,Texas,do hereby declare and
proclaim the 24th day of October 2025 as
"WORLD POLIO DAY"
in the City of Denton and encourage all citizens to join me and Rotary
ti International in the fight for a polio-free world.
