Sprayground at Carl Gene Young Sr. Park
Groundbreaking Ceremony
DENTON, TX,June 19,2017—The City of Denton Parks and Recreation Department and
volunteer leaders are excited to announce a public groundbreaking ceremony for the
development of the City's first sprayground. The ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 24
from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Carl Gene Young Sr. Park.
The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. with remarks by City Council member Gerard Hudspeth,
Denton resident and volunteer Amber Briggle, and Parks and Recreation Director Emerson
Vorel. The public is invited to the ceremony and welcome to enjoy free hot dogs, cold drinks,
and an inflatable water slide.
The sprayground idea was first identified by a group of local parents, then grew into a grassroots
campaign led by Amber Briggle with the support of City Council, the Denton Parks Foundation,
and the City of Denton Parks and Recreation Department.
Through hard work and determination residents raised $10,493 to help fund and encourage the
development of a new sprayground. To supplement those efforts, the City committed $41,600
from Park Development Funds and voters approved the sale of$200,000 of General Obligation
Bonds. Construction will begin the week of June 26 and the City will provide completion
