Denton County Awarded the Emergency Solutions Grant
Collaborative Effort between Denton County Partners Addresses Homelessness
DENTON, TX, Oct. 18, 2017—Denton County has been awarded a two-year grant that will
provide $600,000 annually toward programs addressing homelessness. The grant has been a
collaborative effort between the City of Denton, Christian Community Action, Denton County
Friends of the Family, Giving Hope, Inc., and the Salvation Army of Denton, The grant will
apply to services for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 program years.
The Emergency Solutions Grant is a competitive program that awards funds to Texas cities,
counties, and private nonprofit organizations providing services to help at-risk and homeless
persons quickly regain stability in permanent housing. The program is funded by the U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development and is administered by the Texas Department of
Housing and Community Affairs. The funds from the grant will be used in five key areas:
• Street Outreach: connecting unsheltered homeless people on the street with essential
housing and services
• Emergency Shelter: temporary housing for people experiencing homelessness
• Homelessness Prevention: rental assistance to prevent individuals or families from
becoming homeless
• Rapid Re-Housing: rental assistance to house people who are experiencing homelessness
• Homelessness Management Information System: data used for the provision of housing
and services to homeless, and to assess the effectiveness of homelessness assistance
programs
Denton County has a history of receiving Emergency Solutions Grant funding. Though the grant
was not awarded last year, the City of Denton, the City of Lewisville, and Denton County
worked together to provide funding for the continuation of services. This year, though the
ongoing leadership of the Denton County Homeless Leadership Team and the efforts of the
agency partners, the community was able to present a new grant application demonstrating a
system-wide strategic plan. The data-driven, evidenced-based, and fiscally responsible solutions
support a path to making homelessness rare, brief, and nonrecurring in Denton County.
