10182017 - Denton Awarded the Emergency Solutions Grant (Oct. 2017) IOV FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE DENTON Brian Daskam • (940) 349-7567 • Brian.Daskam@cityofdenton.com Denton County Awarded the Emergency Solutions Grant Collaborative Effort between Denton County Partners Addresses Homelessness DENTON, TX, Oct. 18, 2017—Denton County has been awarded a two-year grant that will provide $600,000 annually toward programs addressing homelessness. The grant has been a collaborative effort between the City of Denton, Christian Community Action, Denton County Friends of the Family, Giving Hope, Inc., and the Salvation Army of Denton, The grant will apply to services for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 program years. The Emergency Solutions Grant is a competitive program that awards funds to Texas cities, counties, and private nonprofit organizations providing services to help at-risk and homeless persons quickly regain stability in permanent housing. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and is administered by the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs. The funds from the grant will be used in five key areas: • Street Outreach: connecting unsheltered homeless people on the street with essential housing and services • Emergency Shelter: temporary housing for people experiencing homelessness • Homelessness Prevention: rental assistance to prevent individuals or families from becoming homeless • Rapid Re-Housing: rental assistance to house people who are experiencing homelessness • Homelessness Management Information System: data used for the provision of housing and services to homeless, and to assess the effectiveness of homelessness assistance programs Denton County has a history of receiving Emergency Solutions Grant funding. Though the grant was not awarded last year, the City of Denton, the City of Lewisville, and Denton County worked together to provide funding for the continuation of services. This year, though the ongoing leadership of the Denton County Homeless Leadership Team and the efforts of the agency partners, the community was able to present a new grant application demonstrating a system-wide strategic plan. The data-driven, evidenced-based, and fiscally responsible solutions support a path to making homelessness rare, brief, and nonrecurring in Denton County.
