Baker • (940) 349-8234 • Lindsey.Baker@cityofdenton.com Food Drive Results: Mayor's Day of Concern for the Hungry DENTON, TX, May 19, 2017—Mayor Chris Watts hosted a press conference today, declaring May 19 as the Mayor's Day of Concern for the Hungry and announcing the results of the one- week food collection drive from May 6-12. 10,674 pounds of food were donated by the community, which will help to stem the tide of hunger for an estimated 115,480 residents of Denton County and one in four children who face hunger and food insecurity. Food donations were accepted at area business and school locations. Today, Mayor Watts recognized the locations that donated the most during the food collection drive. All numbers listed are a combination of food and cash donated. $1 cash donated is equivalent to three meals. Top School North Texas Collegiate Academy 3,551 Top Service Category—GOAL, a Denton Independent School District service program, 2,548 Top Financial Institution—DATCU, 625 Top Business Category— Safran, 445 Top Car Dealership—Classic of Denton, 250 All food collected during the Mayor's Day of Concern will go directly to Denton-area nonprofit organizations that serve those most in need. These organizations include Our Daily Bread, Denton County Friends of the Family, the Salvation Army of Denton, First Refuge Ministries, Denton County MHMR, Denton Community Food Center, Vision Ministries, and the on-campus student pantries at Texas Woman's University and North Central Texas College.
