City Announces Reduction in Residential Solid Waste Rates
DENTON, TX, March 27, 2018—At a special called meeting on March 27, the Denton City
Council approved a 12 percent reduction in solid waste residential collection service rates for the
remainder of the 2017-18 fiscal year. The new rates will go into effect on March 28 and
customers will begin seeing the decreased rates with subsequent billing cycles.
"This rate reduction was made possible through staff efforts to improve the Department's budget
and project management processes," said Director of Finance Antonio Puente. "I am pleased that
we are able to pass these savings on to ratepayers."
Residential solid waste customers will see monthly rates decrease from $27.85 to $24.51 if they
currently use a standard cart, a savings of$3.34 per month or $20.04 over the next six months.
Customers with large cart service will see rates decrease from $33.25 to $29.26, a savings of
$3.99 per month or $23.94 over the next six months. Customers with an additional large cart will
see the monthly rate decrease from $19.75 to $17.3 8.
Because solid waste service is subject to sales taxes, customers will also see a slight decrease in
the taxes charged due to the decrease in the cost of the service.
"We are happy to provide savings to ratepayers whenever we can," said Director of Solid Waste
Ethan Cox. "Our ratepayers should feel like we are being good stewards of their money while
still providing outstanding customer service."
The rate reduction was recommended by the Public Utilities Board with a vote of 6-0 and
approved by the City Council unanimously.
