Keep Denton Beautiful Receives National and State Awards and Grants
April 27, 2018 - Denton,TX— Denton placed 2"d in the 2018 Governor's Community Achievement Awards(GCAA) for the population
category of 90,001—180,000.The GCAA has been awarded by Keep Texas Beautiful (KTB) and the Texas Department of Transportation
(TxDOT)for more than 30 years and recognizes communities who are working diligently to create and sustain comprehensive
environmental and beautification programs. Denton was also recognized for"Sustained Excellence"for receiving a score of 90 or higher
for the past three years (2016-2018).This award application was written and submitted by Keep Denton Beautiful,Inc. (KDB).
GCAA-recognized communities demonstrate excellence in seven areas of environmental programming: 1) community leadership and
coordination;2) public awareness; 3) education;4) beautification and community improvement; 5) litter prevention and cleanup;6) solid
waste management;and 7) litter law and illegal dumping enforcement.
KDB and their partners were also awarded the following Individual and Organization Awards from KTB:
■ Denia Recreation Center was awarded first place for KTB's Government Award (population category 50,000—150,000),which
recognizes outstanding contributions to the Texas environment made by government departments, divisions or agencies. For
the past 11 years,the Denia Recreation Center has provided environmental education programming,which includes such
programs as Camp Voyage for children ages five-12; Preschool Master Naturalist and Gardener programs to children ages
three-five;and week-long summer camps for Junior Master Naturalists and Gardeners.
■ Lancine Bentley, City of Denton Community Improvement Services Manager,was awarded KTB's Ed Davis Litter Law
Enforcement Award (statewide), a once-in-a-lifetime award recognizing an enforcement professional who has gone above
and beyond in their approaches to enforcing environmental laws and regulations. She has established a proactive and
educational approach to code enforcement, and has worked with TxDOT and Union Pacific Railroad to develop a maintenance
plan to improve public rights-of-way on several City entryways and thoroughfares. Lancine also serves on the KDB Board of
Directors and acted as KDB's Program Manager from 1999-2008.
• Denton County Master Gardeners (DCMG)were awarded first place for KTB's Civic Organization Award in the program
category which recognizes contributions by civic organizations that support the KTB mission. Since 1989, DCMG has worked
with other non-profits and schools to provide education, beautification, and sustainable gardening advice and hands-on
opportunities to Denton County residents.
Keep Denton Beautiful,Inc.also received the Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP) Grant from Keep American Beautiful (KAB).
KDB,Inc.will participate in this national program to reduce the impact of cigarette butt litter with a $5,000 grant. Cigarette butts are the
most-littered item in America, representing nearly 38 percent of all items littered according to "Litter in America," Keep America
Beautiful's landmark study of litter and littering behavior.Grant money will go towards cigarette butt receptacles, marketing,and
promotional materials with the goal of reducing the occurrence of cigarette butt litter in Denton.
